PUBLIC FORUM : EMPHASIS ON RACE IN TRIAL COMMENTARY DECRIED.

Is it possible to end this constant haranguing about why people, other than ourselves, do or do not think O.J. Simpson is guilty? I am relieved that he was found liable in the civil action. I was disappointed, saddened and astounded a·stound

I do not care anything about his sex, age, race, religion or origin of birth.

I am sick and tired of reading and hearing that I believe, as I do, by reason of the color of someone's skin. How dare anyone presume to know what is in my heart and mind?

Why do I get the feeling that many of the people who are complaining that it was unfair to try O.J. Simpson a second time doubtlessly were among those who cheered the loudest when Stacy Koon and Timothy Wind were convicted of violating Rodney King's civil rights in their second trial?

What is the district attorney going to do with this patent case of perjury perjury (pûr`jərē), in criminal law, the act of willfully and knowingly stating a falsehood under oath or under affirmation in judicial or administrative proceedings. ? This is a brilliant opportunity to redeem his office from the some of its prior failures and, at the same time, to send an important message to litigants who are often tempted - like O.J. - to put financial gain ahead of their obligation to give truthful testimony.

Animal regulation shake-up

As a volunteer in animal rescue for many years, I was delighted to read that the Animal Regulation Commission is planning on overhauling the department. It is both a human and animal tragedy that we kill thousands of pets each year. I can only hope that changes will be implemented quickly, as every delay costs another life.

Veterinarians Veterinarians and veterinary surgeons (vets) are medical professionals who operate exclusively on animals. Well-known and notable veterinarians include:

All the medical data on early spaying and neutering, has shown no adverse effects on the animals; in fact, these animals have been healthier overall. It is time for the private sector to re-evaluate and commit to early spaying and neutering.

There are hundreds of private agencies that do an incredible job in taking the burden of rescue, medical care and placement into new homes away from the department. They are overloaded because the feeling is that if you take an animal to the pound, you are condemning it to illness and death. The perception for many years, has been that the animal shelter is just a misnomer misnomer n. the wrong name.

Also, instead of, or in addition to, increasing the license fees for unaltered pets, isn't it time to consider a license fee for cats? A large percentage of the department's budget goes to our feline population. Cat owners should be willing to share the burdens and expenses along with the dog owners, who have shouldered this burden alone since the department's inception.

This is in reference to ``City animal agency to be overhauled,'' Daily News, Feb. 4. We have been having trouble in our neighborhood with dogs running around loose and causing mayhem. But because animal regulation is so understaffed with field officers, it was impossible for them to patrol our streets looking for Looking for

Most dog owners in our community are responsible owners, but there are some who allow their animals to run loose, attacking pets or people.

I am delighted to hear that something is going to be done about overhauling animal regulation. I hope that increasing the number of field officers is on the agenda.

Hazing and the real thing

Re Marilyn Neville's letter about Marine hazing, Public Forum, Feb. 7:

She bemoans violent Marine hazing. She decries violence in movies and TV. She worries that we are ``forsaking the good and beautiful and regressing to our baser natures.''

I have news for her. She is free to write letters to the editor because some violent young men froze their feet at Valley Forge, Bastogne and along the Yalu River.

It is a saying as old as human warfare: ``If you do not sweat and bleed and suffer in training, you will surely sweat more, bleed more, suffer more and maybe lose in war.''

In 1969, during an initiation for crossing the equator, I crawled on my hands and knees along a hot, rough ship's deck while men swinging lengths of fire hose beat me. I then proceeded through a long canvas tube full of grease and garbage. For the finale, I was sloshed sloshed

Royko rebutted

Mike Royko's rave review of ``The People vs. Larry Flynt'' (Opinions, Feb. 9) overlooks the fact that the people were the losers. That's not not surprising, since pornography was exalted over political and religious freedom as our Constitution's most important reason for existing.

The popular fad of praising anti-hypocrites is becoming as perverted per·vert·ed

Newhall Ranch project

I find it rather amusing that the Ventura County Board of Supervisors The examples and perspective in this article or section may represent an unduly geographically limited view of the subject.

The Board of Supervisors is the body governing counties in the U.S.

The supervisors didn't have such concerns when they approved the massive Ahmanson Ranch development, which will have a much more significant impact on Los Angeles County, while Ventura County will get all the benefits of the revenue.

Eat your heart out, Ventura County.

Talbert Kanigher's criticism of the Sierra Club and its hikes is unfounded and calculated to create public resentment (Public Forum, Jan. 29).

I have hiked with the Sierra Club in Griffith Park for 17 years and categorically refute Kanigher's accusations. Sierra Club leaders are trained and certified. They are involved because of their desire to preserve and enjoy nature.

In Griffith Park's 6.5 square miles, there are about 60 miles of trails, virtually all of which have been in existence for 30 or more years. There is no need to hike off trail. To do so is understood to be against policy and would be uncomfortable due to heavy brush and poison oak poison oak: see poison ivy.

LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  school bonds

Regarding ``LAUSD creates school bond panel,'' Daily News, Jan. 28:

If the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  wants to inspire public confidence, it can start by giving our children the education they deserve. They certainly don't have my confidence when they throw tax dollars down the sewer and put the futures of our children in jeopardy, with unproved and hare-brained ideas like fuzzy math and spelling, whole-word reading and revisionist history.

I'm tired of the public schools spending tax dollars to endorse the idea that every lifestyle, no matter how deviant, repugnant REPUGNANT. That which is contrary to something else; a repugnant condition is one contrary to the contract itself; as, if I grant you a house and lot in fee, upon condition that you shall not aliens, the condition is repugnant and void. Bac. Ab. Conditions, L.  or offensive it may be to the family values of the parents of the students, has to be embraced and accepted on an equal par.

I urge all citizens to vote against any bond measure for the LAUSD until it stops using our schools for social enginee-ring and worthless experimental programs, and starts giving our children the education they are owed.

There is no reason to incur more indebtedness for ourselves when all we get out of it is the bill, while the politicians spend our money, not as intended, but at their whim.
