PUBLIC FORUM : CALL THIS A LAKE?I took my family out to the grand opening of Hansen Dam Hansen Dam in Los Angeles County, California was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District in 1939 and 1940. The project is located near the northern edge of the San Fernando Valley on Tujunga Wash, about one mile below the confluence of the Big Tujunga Wash to do some fishing. To our horror, we saw a small pond with thousands of people. I grew up in Pacoima in the '50s and '60s. Coming from a large family, we needed a large place to explore. Back then it was a real lake. There was water-skiing, boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, pony rides, archery and food. What the city has given us today is a pond and nothing more. And to think that 85 acres was reduced to 10.5 acres at a cost of some $56 million. This is a joke on the Northeast Valley. What were they thinking when they were planning a lake? Did the planners and City Council members know the difference between a lake and pond? Maybe they should have gone to Lake Balboa to get some ideas. Did they know that the Northeast Valley has the largest growth population in the Valley? The communities deserve better than a couple of ponds. I for one would like to see Hansen Dam restored to its original state. For us to settle for less means denying us a real outdoor environment for our children and families. Wake up, Northeast Valley, we just got the short end of the stick again. Write to your council members about this short stick. - Myra Makee Sylmar Getting Valley's fair share In response to your editorial ``The zero kids'' (Daily News, Aug. 31), I too am outraged that the young people of the northeast San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. are being unfairly ignored. I am not going down without a fight for the kids in my community. Pacoima is an area with much the same needs as Watts or East Los Angeles. How many federal aid dollars have come to the 7th Council District in relation to the other districts? Is the Valley getting its fair share? I do not intend to let the CDD off the hook without answers to these questions. I have already taken several pro-active measures. I am working legislatively to include Pacoima in the Youth Opportunity Grant application. I have also regrouped the CDD staff to assemble a working model that will achieve the same objectives of the Youth Opportunity Grant Program. Either way, the needs of our Northeast Valley youths will be met. We need to review all programs and grant applications to make sure that the Valley is being fairly served by all local, state, and federal programs fairly and equitably. - Alex Padilla Alex Padilla is a politician in California. The issue in VICA's opposition to Senate Bill 1101 - or its new version, SB 372 - is not, as Broad states, ``about union-busting and private greed.'' Rather it is about seizing an opportunity for the San Fernando Valley to create an independent San Fernando Valley Transportation Zone to improve transportation service, reduce costs and provide greater rider use and convenience for Valley residents and employees. Every time our Police Department does its job (SIS killing two men who continued to hold up travel agencies), Steven Yagman or some other lawyer sues it. In regard to the senior lead officer taking an ``inordinate'' interest in her property, the fact of the matter is that a complaint was lodged by her neighbors as to building code violations that she is well aware of. The senior lead officer was only accompanying a city building inspector to provide protection. Her fence was never jumped and her gate hinges were never removed. In fact, the gate was unlocked at the time the officer and inspector entered. We have been block captains for our Neighborhood Watch for the past eight years and have worked side by side with this senior lead officer and he has been nothing but the very finest. He is held in high regard by both his peers and by the community and is an exceptional LAPD officer. At 5 feet, 11 inches and 184 pounds, he was the smallest of the heavyweights but he packed an awesome punch. He won the Western Regional Championship at the old Olympic Auditorium and then won the national title in Nebraska by knocking out five straight opponents, a record that still stands. Two of his opponents suffered broken jaws and more broken ribs. He won his first 12 professional bouts before fighting to a draw with Tony Doyle, a tall lanky boxer from Montana.
