PUBLIC FORUM : BIG BROTHER BANKING.Your March 4 commentary on Big Brother in banking was right on the money, so to speak, and only the tip of the iceberg tip of the iceberg n. pl. tips of the iceberg A small evident part or aspect of something largely hidden: afraid that these few reported cases of the disease might only be the tip of the iceberg. . Big Brother is also snooping into our shopping habits and everything else we do, and yet we continue to allow it to happen. Take, for example, the man who slipped on an overlooked spill in a local supermarket. When he filed suit to recover his medical costs, the supermarket turned the whole issue against him, citing his purchasing habits, which included liquor, thus insinuating in·sin·u·at·ing adj. 1. Since when do our purchasing habits have anything to do with store maintenance and responsibility for the lack thereof? My question is this: When are we, as an intelligent society, going to stand up and demand this invasion of our privacy be stopped? It's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. (Feb. 4): I congratulate the Daily News for not only keeping the community informed on activities that will eventually affect and influence our lives but for providing us with instantaneous access to the information we need if we are to participate and to act ourselves. Only because the Daily News provided names and addresses could I possibly use what little time I have in my day to write the agencies which would, if allowed, enter my life through the back door of ``regulations'' rather than through the entrance designated by the Constitution and known to one and all as the U.S. Congress. - Alicia Marcaccini Tarzana Hayden targets seniors State Sen. Tom Hayden Thomas Emmett "Tom" Hayden (born December 11, 1939) is an American social and political activist and politician, most famous for his involvement in the anti-war and civil rights movements of the 1960s. is targeting seniors (75 years old and up) to meet different driving standards. He is advocating road tests every three years for those 75 and older, more frequently the older they get. Right now we have written tests every 4 years for all. It would make seniors nervous to have a government examiner sitting in their car telling them what to do. Years ago the government made businesses that have government contracts stop giving tests as a prerequisite of employment because those who could do the job well would be nervous during these tests and could fail. Senior drivers are no different. They would do things with an examiner beside them that they would not do when alone. Good drivers could be forced out of their cars because they got nervous with a government examiner looking over their shoulder telling them what to do. He wrote the horrendous ruling Roe vs. Wade that gave the women of this country the legal right to kill their unborn babies. He was also instrumental in doing away with the death penalty for people convicted of murdering innocent people who had already been born and were living in this country. These two acts by Blackmun have eroded the respect for life, ethics, family, law enforcement, child rearing, religious beliefs, schools and so very much more. The final summation of the life of Blackmun: He has now gone to a higher court, where I truly believe the rules are substantially different. - Joyce Flynn Glendale Boland's agenda Re ``Boland vows war vs. compromise charter proposal'' (March 2): I served with Commissioner Paula Boland on the elected Charter Reform Commission. While Paula is a very experienced Sacramento politician with her years as an elected state representative, she never gained the support of the majority of the elected Charter Reform Commission. This caused her great frustration. I learned early in the process that with 15 commissioners, one would need to garner at least eight votes in order to have a motion approved. Unfortunately, Paula was not successful in gaining consensus for her issues. Could it be that Paula is more interested in promoting the breakup of the LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA) and Valley secession than charter reform? I find it confusing that Paula is troubled with the living wage and domestic partner provisions of the new charter but strongly supported the expansion of the City Council from 15 to 25 members. The council expansion will cost the taxpayers millions of dollars in additional taxes. The city already has an existing living wage ordinance and provides domestic partners coverage to employees. While the compromise charter may not be all that we wished for, it is far better than the existing antiquated charter. - Dennis P. Zine Dennis P.
