PUBLIC FORUM : `ARROGANT BEHAVIOR' SPURS SECESSION DRIVE.

I read your coverage of the problems experienced by Valley VOTE members who were attempting to gather signatures at Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits. , and I am very angry.

I went to the air show July 19, and I talked to one of the petition circulators outside the main gate. He told me how he and others were run off the property by airport authorities An airport authority is an independent entity charged with the operation and oversight of an airport (or group of airports). These authorities are often governed by a group of airport commissioners, who are appointed to lead the authority by a government official. . Their ability to get a lot of signatures was sharply curtailed.

If the city powers that be were responsible for this abuse of our rights because they are against the breakaway process, they forgot one thing: This is exactly the kind of arrogant behavior toward the people that motivated many to seek independence in the first place. By this action, city leaders have given even more impetus to the breakaway movement. We won't forget.

We need to regain control. Maybe the only way to take back our city is to have our own city.

We Americans must be alert and educate ourselves with the truth and make our awareness known not only to the current administration but to this condescending Congress.

Ulster arson attack

I would like to comment on ``IRA's role lost amid violence in N. Ireland'' by Conor Cruise O'Brien Conor Cruise O'Brien (Irish: Conchubhar Crús Ó Briain (known affectionately as 'The Cruiser'); born 3 November, 1917) is an Irish politician, writer and academic.  in Viewpoint July 19.

O'Brien would like readers to believe that the Irish Republican Army Irish Republican Army (IRA), nationalist organization devoted to the integration of Ireland as a complete and independent unit. What O'Brien failed to mention was that the march was banned by the British authorities and the police on the recommendation of an independent parades commission The Parades Commission is a quasi-judicial body responsible for placing restrictions on or banning outright any parades in Northern Ireland it deems contentious or offensive.  in an effort to avoid violence. How dishonest of O'Brien not to have included this fact in his article.

Tax to fix sidewalks

What great news to wake up to on a Sunday morning Sunday Morning may refer to:
  • "Sunday Morning (radio program)", a Canadian radio program formerly aired on CBC Radio One
  • CBS News Sunday Morning, a television news program on CBS in the United States
  • Sunday Morning (TBS TV series)
: Our City Council wants to tax property owners for sidewalk repairs (``Taking crack at sidewalk repairs; $740 million tax for backlog weighed,'' Daily News, July 19).

To inform the City Council: I don't own the sidewalks; I don't own the parkways from where the roots are pushing up the sidewalks. I have to water the trees. I cut the grass in the parkways, and I even clean the street along the parkway by my home - the city sends a street sweeper around once every eight weeks, if I'm lucky.

The best thing the City Council can do is forgo their fat raise and put the money to good use fixing the sidewalks.

I'm not going to vote for any new taxes.

Immigration immigration, entrance of a person (an alien) into a new country for the purpose of establishing permanent residence. Motives for immigration, like those for migration generally, are often economic, although religious or political factors may be very important.  and gridlock Gridlock

A government, business or institution's inability to function at a normal level due either to complex or conflicting procedures within the administrative framework or to impending change in the business.

The Daily News reported (``Sprawl and crawl; L.A. plan predicts N. Valley gridlock,'' July 13) that in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  of 2010, Sylmar and Granada Hills will be the ground zero of traffic, with cars inching along at 3 to 7 mph on snarled snarl 1

Now the editorial page talks about the loss of farmland in Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc. , Oxnard and Camarillo. It is called urban encroachment or urban sprawl (``Sowing discord; Ventura County farmland initiatives raise serious questions,'' July 20).

There is one answer to both of these problems: Stop immigration.

More people means more traffic. More people means loss of our best agricultural soil to home builders - no farms, no food. Our politicians won't bite the bullet and make choices that some call divisive.

If immigration is so great, open the flood gates. We will become a Third World country in the blink of a decade.

Airport official rebutted

I am surprised that Victor J. Gill (``Burbank Airport critics ignore the law,'' Public Forum, July 16) is a director of public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most  and communications for the Burbank Airport.

He doesn't seem to see what is coming and that a greatly expanded airport terminal in Burbank will be outdated in 10 years or maybe less. This is simply not the location for it.

Burbank officials and residents favor the construction of a safer and modestly larger terminal in Burbank.

The solution to the problem is to build a greatly expanded terminal facility somewhere that it would be welcomed and favored. A few suggested locations would be Glendale, Pasadena or Palmdale.

Remember older animals

Regarding the article ``Shelters put kitties, pups up for homes'' (Daily News, July 18):

I believe, even in Los Angeles city shelters, kittens and puppies are easiest to place because of the ``cute'' and ``playful'' factors. The adult animals need the most help with placement. Wonderful animals from 6 months old to 7 years old and up need loving, responsible homes.

I hope that in the future, city shelters will consider doing an ``adults only'' mobile adoption day.

Alarcon-Katz race

It was interesting reading that former Assembly leader Richard Katz has dropped his request for a complete ballot recount - he was losing votes - but not his lawsuit against his former opponent, City Councilman Richard Alarcon.

I wonder why not? Does he want to be the next Bob Dornan?

One reason, I suspect, is that during his 16-year tenure in the state Assembly, he was an assistant to influential Speaker Willie Brown The name Willie Brown may refer to:
  • Willie Brown (politician) (born 1934), Mayor of San Francisco (1996–2004), Speaker of the California State Assembly (1980–1995)
  • Willie Brown (football player) (born 1940), American football Hall-of-Fame cornerback
and got used to displaying power, sometimes against fellow Democrats - including a then-weak Latino contingent.

However, term limits forced him out in 1996, the very same year when the Latino community first exploded in the polls and started to rise in power and influence that is still continuing.

Katz obviously has had a hard time getting attuned at·tune

Los Angeles

Regarding the 20th state Senate District race: I love this contest between Richard Katz and Richard Alarcon, two typical liberals who can't stop name-calling even when talking about a ``friend.'' Myself, I donated money to the campaign of Republican Ollie McCaulley but voted for Alarcon because I hold the view that Katz was the worse of the two evils.

Thank God for the new open primary.

Van Nuys

The small difference in the vote count in the Alarcon-Katz contest has revealed a very serious flaw in our election procedure.

When I went to vote, I noticed that my wife's name had not been removed from the roll even though she has been deceased for over two years. I mentioned this to the poll worker, but she ignored me.

It would have been very easy for any woman to give my wife's name and vote in her stead.

I wonder how many dead people are still on the voter rolls?
