PUBLIC FORUM; A CLASS ACT.

Thanks for the great article you ran on the front page of the Feb. 27 paper about Alan Cronin (``Walking tall''). After being bombarded for weeks with people like Jennifer Lopez and Darva Conyers, it was refreshing to see a story about someone with a great deal of class.

I wish him and his brave wife, Maria, all the luck in the world and wish anyone who feels cheated in life to appreciate what these two have done. They should be an inspiration to us all. I also wish you would run more articles about people with morals and convictions like these two.

LOST HIKER'S THANKS

Your Feb. 12 article ``Hiker in good condition after rescue'' on my rescue from Mount Lawler in Angeles National Forest The Angeles National Forest (ANF) was established by executive order on December 20, 1892 as the San Gabriel Timberland Reserve. It covers over 2,600 km² (650,000 acres) and is located in the San Gabriel Mountains of Los Angeles County, just north of the metropolitan area of Los  read like a tribute to the Montrose Search and Rescue Team. I couldn't be more pleased, as there is no way you could overstate the value of the sheriff's several search and rescue teams.

The work of the search and rescue teams is extremely difficult and requires tremendous physical conditioning and extensive and wide-ranging training.

I am alive thanks to the Montrose Search and Rescue Team assisted by the Altadena Search and Rescue Team. I am pleased that your article focused on these teams. They deserve all the praise they receive and more.

MORE THAN MEDIOCRITY

Real reform will only come with independent civilian oversight of the Police Department. They cannot police themselves. If we want them to protect us, they must truly serve us.

WASTE OF MONEY

Re ``Cargo-style pants subject of lawsuit'' (March 1): As I read the article about the boy who insisted on violating the school dress code, I thought, What's wrong with this kid? As I read further, I realized that the problem may be with the father, who considers his family to be above the rules because they are rich. I found the statement that they are a ``seven-digit income family and not inner-city scum'' to be repulsive, although I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

"Don't know the trade." A Street expression used whenever one party lacks knowledge of a trade or receives conflicting instructions from the other party.
if the parent really said it or not.

I don't earn a seven-digit income and insisted that my children follow the school dress code. Gosh, am I scum? I have to take a shower. ... Is this child learning that the rules don't apply to the rich? I must ask why this matter has grown to the point of legal action, and how much LAUSD LAUSD Los Angeles Unified School District (Los Angeles, CA)  money will be wasted on this matter instead of being spent on our children.

WASTE OF TIME

Re ``Cargo-style pants subject of lawsuit'':

I am a mother of two students who attend or have previously attended LAUSD since kindergarten. I have been told the reason for the dress code is so that the administrators can see at a glance who should and shouldn't be on school grounds. This may work for children in the age bracket of that school. But what about adults on school grounds; how does the school know who should or shouldn't be there? Why don't the teachers and administrators wear the same uniform?

My main complaint over dress codes is the time that each individual school spends on this issue. Personally, I think that if LAUSD spent as much time on teaching as it does on creating and enforcing dress codes, LAUSD would rank No. 1 in the nation.

RULES APPLY TO ALL

Should we congratulate the parents of Damien Stickler-Gamm for suing the LAUSD or charge them with contributing to the delinquency of a minor Any action by an adult that allows or encourages illegal behavior by a person under the age of 18, or that places children in situations that expose them to illegal behavior. Contributing to the delinquency of a minor can be as simple as keeping a child home from school and thus, ? Just because they have a seven-digit income means their son doesn't have to follow the dress code for Parkman Middle School? Does wearing cargo-style pants influence his learning ability? I really thought that you went to school to learn. If he ever joins the military are they going to ask for a waiver from military uniforms?

When I attended Parkman Junior High School, as it was called then, the boys were not allowed to wear shorts and the girls had to wear skirts that touched the ground when in a kneeling position. There were no exceptions.

Damien's parents are telling their son that he does not have to obey rules and regulations. Rules and laws are created for everyone.
