PUB GRUB FOR LESS AT MCG'S.Byline: Larry Lipson Restaurant Critic There aren't many independent eating places left, other than your local Thai or Chinese cafes, where a diner can sit down and enjoy a full-service evening meal with entrees priced at $10 or less. But they're around if you look hard enough. If you're lucky you might stumble across an Irish-American pub like the new McG's in Chatsworth, which still serves up such entree-type dishes as its in-house version of Irish stew Irish stew n. A stew of meat and vegetables. Noun 1. Irish stew - meat (especially mutton) stewed with potatoes and onions stew - food prepared by stewing especially meat or fish with vegetables for $9, the traditional British-style shepherd's pie shep·herd's pie n. A meat pie baked in a crust of mashed potatoes. shepherd's pie Noun a baked dish of minced meat covered with mashed potato Noun 1. at the same price, and a good old fish-and-chips plate for $10. With its huge selection of bottled beers and worthy taps of draft plus a cinema-size television screen projecting the best sports happenings, McG's already has garnered a solid local following. Clannish; exclusive. , somewhat rustic interior has its expected pool tables and dartboards plus casual high-stool seating and one or two boothed areas. The savory Irish stew, dubbed one of McG's classics, is served casserole style, a generous portion of tender chunks of braised braise tr.v. braised, brais·ing, brais·es To cook (meat or vegetables) by browning in fat, then simmering in a small quantity of liquid in a covered container. beef with carrots, potatoes and cabbage plus a couple of slices of premises-baked Irish soda bread Noun 1. [Probably from chub (from the plumpness of the fish). fries (or if preferred, onion rings) is definitely ready for a sprinkling of vinegar from a bucket on each table holding bottles of HP, A1, ketchup, mustard, Tabasco and that needed malt vinegar. Hungry? One of the more filling items is McG's shepherd's pie. The heaping, juicy ground beef mixture here arrives covered completely with a thick buttermilk buttermilk residual fluid after removal of fat from milk in butter manufacture; a protein-rich supplement fed to pigs. mashed potato coating. And there's a colorful side of various sauteed vegetables cooked in garlic and butter. It's certainly a hefty serving for under $10. Want to spend a bit more? Get the steak. Although it was slightly oversalted one night, the half-pound flatiron steak here seems like a pretty good buy at $15. Served with the same array of sauteed vegetables as the shepherd's pie, it also comes with a choice of potato (baked or fries) or onion rings. At these prices, you can put up with a mistake or two. Order a Caesar salad caesar salad n. A tossed salad of greens, anchovies, croutons, and grated cheese with a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice, and a raw or coddled egg. ($6) here and it may arrive after the entrees, as it did one evening recently. Additionally, it's a somewhat unusual rendition, offering the expected romaine lettuce, croutons and parmesan, but oddly possessing such non-Caesar ingredients as avocado, tomato and cucumber. Actually, it's quite a good and satisfying salad, but hardly traditional. Call it an Irish Caesar. And there are, of course, some pre-entree pub-style noshes. As an appetizer choice, either battered clam strips ($6) with a tomato dipping sauce or meaty Buffalo-style hot wings ($7) with a ranch dip can hit the spot with a refreshing brew from one of the 34 taps, like a glass of dark, foaming Smithwick's. And there's more. On its roster of untried under-$10 plates are bangers and mash More of a serving suggestion than a recipe, bangers and mash is a British colloquial name for sausage (bangers) served with mashed potatoes. The sausage may be one of a variety of flavoured sausage; such as pork, pork and apple, tomato, beef, Lincolnshire, or Cumberland. ($8), shrimp and chips ($9), calamari rings and chips ($8), chicken tenders and chips ($7) and deep-fried clam strips and chips ($6). Also untried to date are McG's Cobb salad The Cobb salad was a signature menu item of the legendary Brown Derby in Hollywood, a landmark restaurant in Los Angeles, California. Variations of the salad are now served in restaurants world-wide. ($7.50) and its burgers ($6, $9 and $14). The kitchen also bakes a limited number of chicken pot pies ($9 each). Unfortunately, they weren't available during review visits. McG's is a jolly place, unpretentious and generally pleasing. But most importantly Adv. 1. most importantly - above and beyond all other consideration; "above all, you must be independent" above all, most especially , it's not expensive. And that means a lot these days.
