PT TAMBANG BATUBARA BUKIT ASAM TO BUILD 2X600 MW PLTU.
PT BA said the project is joint venture between the governments of Indonesia and Malaysia and the power will be supplied to Johor in Malaysia. The feasibility study on the project has been completed. It is expected to be completed in 2006. Coal requirement for the plant will be supplied from the Cerenti coal mine, which is estimated to have an annual production capacity of 6 million tons.
Earlier PT BA planned to build two other power plants but the plan was shelved as a result of the crisis. The Banjarsari PLTU in Lahat was to be built with a capacity of 2 x 100 MW and 2 x 200 MW; and another plant was to be built in Bangko Tengah, Tanjung Enim in South Sumatra with a capacity of 2 x 660 MW.
Construction of the Banjarasari PLTU in the regency of Lahat, South Sumatra was to meet power requirement in southern Sumatra (South Sumatra, Lampung, Jambi and Bengkulu). The Mulut Tambang PLTU in Bangko Tengah was to supply power to Java. PT BA said the two shelved projects are expected to be implemented in 2005.
Southern Sumatra now has hydropower plant (PLTAs) with a total capacity of 1,684.3 MWh and diesel power plant (PLTD) with a total capacity of 138.645 Mwh. The planning data of PLN showed that southern Sumatra needs 3,837 GwH in 2004/2005 as shown in the following table.
