MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- PSS Systems, the market leader in legal holds and retention management solutions, today announced two critical corporate accelerators to better enable enterprises to respond to revisions in Federal Rules of Civil Procedure The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) are rules governing civil procedure in United States district (federal) courts, that is, court procedures for civil suits. The FRCP are promulgated by the United States Supreme Court pursuant to the Rules Enabling Act, and then approved  on Discovery which go into effect on December 1, 2006. These revisions require companies to disclose their retention practices for both physical and electronic data, to identify and disclose the sources of this data in the enterprise and to effectively and completely preserve and produce that data in litigation An action brought in court to enforce a particular right. The act or process of bringing a lawsuit in and of itself; a judicial contest; any dispute.

When a person begins a civil lawsuit, the person enters into a process called litigation.
.

PSS Systems is the developer of the Atlas solution suite, the first software suite to help companies manage their legal holds and cross-enterprise retention programs. Available since April 2005 and used by Fortune 500 practice leaders, the Atlas suite includes Atlas LCC (Leadless Chip Carrier, Leaded Chip Carrier) See leadless chip carrier, CLCC and PLCC.

and Atlas ERM. The Atlas ERM module helps companies establish and administer retention programs across disparate data sources and types across the enterprise. The Atlas LCC module automates legal holds and collections workflows to ensure that companies efficiently and effectively meet their duty to preserve and produce information in litigation.

"To effectively, consistently, and confidently address the new Federal Rules, companies must have 3 core programs in place: 1) a robust legal holds process, 2) a reliable map of data sources, and 3) an enterprise retention program that spans paper records in offsite storage as well as electronic information stored in dozens of repositories and file shares across the company," explained Deidre Paknad, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization.  with the data sources and retention program and our accelerators greatly improve the likelihood and speed with which companies can achieve these critical objectives."

The new business accelerator tools include:

* Enterprise Retention Program Accelerator: PSS Systems is bundling a functional classification schema, standard retention schedules, and frequently-referenced legal research and citations free with its Atlas ERM solution. This will allow companies that have not yet developed an enterprise retention program to quickly adopt a corporate classification structure and master retention policy sets, and to quickly tailor and institutionalize in·sti·tu·tion·a·lize

Ryley Carlock & Applewhite, a leading law firm specializing in retention program development and discovery, has developed this accelerator kit for use with Atlas ERM and the firm offers legal services legal services n. the work performed by a lawyer for a client.  and research to tailor the accelerator kit to specific corporate requirements. The bundle significantly reduces the cost of - and therefore greatly accelerates - traditional program development by making available a broad set of standard retention schedules with Atlas ERM out of the box. Atlas ERM is used by some of the world's largest companies to establish and administer retention programs across business units, geographies, and data sources.

* Data Mapping Accelerator: PSS Systems is making access to its Atlas map available to Atlas ERM and Atlas LCC users at no additional cost. The Atlas map enables litigators, discovery staff, IT and records teams to map and document information sources by business unit, functional data types, stewardship and administration roles, and their use within the business. This map encompasses all of the disparate sources of data, from highly structured application data to unstructured data Data that does not reside in fixed locations. Free-form text in a word processing document is a typical example. Contrast with structured data. See free-form database.  on file shares to paper records stored in physical warehouses and to inventories of legacy data and backup tapes See tape backup. . The map synchronizes with Atlas LCC legal holds and collections software so that specific data sources can be identified as relevant to litigation. It also synchronizes with Atlas ERM so that the data sources can be identified as the target repository for specific records classes to link in actual retention practices. Many companies today are engaged in a data mapping exercise for litigation in response to the new Federal Rules. Unfortunately, this is a lost exercise unless they are able to connect the data sources with their ongoing legal holds obligations and to their actual retention practices. The data mapping accelerator kit combined with the Atlas suite makes it possible to achieve both the letter and the spirit of the new Rules and provides a sustainable approach going forward.

"PSS Systems has a very strategic and comprehensive solution for global companies that must comply with the new requirements under the Federal Rules," says Bill McManus, partner at Ryley Carlock & Applewhite. "With our extensive experience in developing retention programs for clients, we realized that the combination of the retention accelerator kit and the Atlas suite would provide great value to companies who are under intense pressures to get effective enterprise programs in place quickly."
