PSE&G'S ELECTRIC SYSTEM READY FOR SUMMER

NEWARK, N.J., June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) and the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland Interconnection (PJM) power pool are in excellent shape to meet demand for electricity this summer.
Frank Cassidy, PSE&G vice president-transmission systems, said PSE&G is in strong position to meet customer demand for power and both PJM and surrounding power pools also are in good shape to meet summer peak demand requirements.
For a typical week this summer, PJM expects to have 55,449 megawatts (MW) of electric generating capacity available. This includes all nuclear generating units operated by PJM-member utilities. The power pool is anticipating a peak demand of 44,292 MW with an available reserve margin of about 25 percent. The reserve target is 22 percent.
PSE&G will have approximately 10,900 MW of generating capacity available to help customers cope with summer. This includes nearly all of the company's fossil-fuel generating fleet and all three nuclear units operated by the company -- the two-unit Salem Nuclear Generating Station and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating Station. PSE&G is predicting a peak demand of 8,755 MW with a reserve margin of more than 24 percent. PSE&G's all-time peak demand record of 9,085 MW was established on July 23, 1991.
Cassidy said the predictions are based on an assumption of normal weather. Extraordinary weather conditions, unanticipated equipment problems, or any combination of the two could result in power alerts and implementation of emergency procedures.
Factors contributing to the positive power outlook this summer include:
-- Completion of the repowering at PSE&G's Burlington Generating Station which will add 60 MW to PSE&G's capacity.
-- Full availability of the company's fleet of gas turbine generators, which can provide about 3,000 MW of capacity to meet peak demands.
-- A demand side management (DSM) appliance recycling program that can account for 43 MW of peak demand. The program allows PSE&G to cycle residential air conditioners during periods of high demand.
-- PJM's 500-kilovolt (KV) transmission system and its connections to the Allegheny Power System, a neighboring regional power pool, has been strengthened with installation of additional capacitors both within PJM and APS.
To get ready for the summer season, Cassidy said PSE&G has inspected more than 1,000 miles of high voltage transmission lines and has performed necessary tree-trimming and maintenance on transmission and distribution circuits. In addition to equipment maintenance, PJM and its member utilities also are preparing for the summer by testing emergency and communications procedures.
PSE&G is the largest member of the eight-utility PJM power pool. PJM serves more than 22 million people in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, and a portion of Virginia. The power pool manages bulk power generating and transmission transactions, coordinated the activities of its member utilities, and maintains interconnections and manages power transactions with neighboring power systems.
