PSC Introduces IMAGER 8000 2-D Handheld Reader for 2-Dimensional Symbology Markets First to Use Advanced CMOS Image Sensor.

ROCHESTER, NY--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 12, 1999--

PSC (Public Service Commission) Same as PUC.  Inc. (Nasdaq: PSCX PSCX PowerShell Community Extensions (Microsoft Window) ), a leading manufacturer and marketer of bar code reading equipment today announced the introduction of the Imager 8000(TM) 2-D Handheld Reader. The Imager 8000 is PSC's first entry in the emerging markets for equipment that combines the capabilities of traditional laser scanners and digital cameras in a versatile, multi-purpose reader.

The Imager 8000 reader is designed for use in a wide range of commercial, industrial and retail markets in which the use of 2-Dimensional symbology sym·bol·o·gy

is becoming popular. 2-Dimensional symbols allow for encoding of the same information as linear codes in a much smaller area or encoding of many times more information in the same area. It will decode traditional 1-Dimensional (linear) bar codes, "stacked" 2-Dimensional PDF (Portable Document Format) The de facto standard for document publishing from Adobe. On the Web, there are countless brochures, data sheets, white papers and technical manuals in the PDF format. 417 symbols and "matrix" 2-Dimensional symbols including MaxiCode, DataMatrix and QR. The imaging features of the reader enable users to take "digital snapshots" of signatures, labels or objects which are then processed and transmitted to a host system.

The Imager 8000 is the first 2-D reader to use an advanced CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) Pronounced "c-moss." The most widely used integrated circuit design. It is found in almost every electronic product from handheld devices to mainframes.  (Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor See MOS.

It is usually an array of charge-coupled devices (CCD) or CMOS sensors such as active-pixel sensors. . CMOS sensors have advantages over CCD CCD

(Charge Coupled Device) sensors due to their inherent low power consumption, high degree of integration and competitive cost. The Imager 8000 contains a unique intelligent aiming system to assist the user in determining the location and optimum reading distance for the symbol to be decoded or the image to be captured. With no moving parts and an impact tolerant case, the Imager 8000 reader is durable and reliable. Because the Imager 8000 operates on a digital image rather than a linear scan line, it provides true omni-directional reading capability.

"The Imager 8000 is an important addition to PSC's strong and diverse line of bar code scanners and systems," said Linda Miller, Senior Vice President and General Manager at PSC. "The market for two-dimensional imagers is predicted to grow dramatically over the next several years as customers deploy systems that exploit the information capacity and convenience of this new breed of products."
