As thousands of protesters gathered Saturday in Washington, D.C., and San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , more than 1,000 people flocked to downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  to denounce Israel's military actions in Lebanon.

``I'm outraged at the death and destruction of the people of Lebanon and Palestine,'' protester Christine Browning said.

in white from head to toe, a group of dancers marched somberly as they hoisted baby bottles and diapers to symbolize the ghosts of the youngest victims of violence.

The march was organized by a number of groups including ANSWER coalition, the Muslim American Society The Muslim American Society (MAS) is a nonprofit organization. It describes itself as an Islamic revival and reform movement. It traces its 1992 origin to the Muslim Brotherhood's founding of the Muslim Students' Association, which created the Islamic Society of North America  and the National Conference of Arab Americans, and was followed by a rally near the downtown Federal Building.

The demonstrations were among a handful organized across the country, including near the White House, to criticize U.S. support for Israel and the violence in Lebanon.

They came a day after the United Nations Security Council announced its unanimous decision to adopt a cease-fire resolution.

One Lebanese woman, who would not give her name, pushed her double stroller and looked on as her young daughter danced atop a giant Palestinian flag placed on the street.

The woman choked up with emotion as she described the terror being suffered by friends and family in her native Lebanon. She said her home in southern Lebanon had been destroyed by Israeli attacks, and the sons and daughters of neighbors and friends have been injured and killed.

``There are too many children dying,'' the woman said.

Ahmed Azam, a representative of the Muslim American Society, said he was outraged by the United States' support of the war.

``There has to be a change in our international policy,'' Azam said. ``We cannot have $3 billion spent on killing people and supporting an unjust occupation.''

``This is the way the world works, Jews surrounded by Arabs,'' Lewis screamed as he complained to a Los Angeles police officer that the sign he carried had been ripped upon his arrival. Across the street, Lewis was joined by a small number of Israeli supporters waving the Israeli flag.

``They are claiming Israel is hurting them, but Hezbollah killed Americans and Israelis. They are no better than al-Qaida,'' Israeli Izek Shomof said.

``Israel needs to stop bombing children,'' said 9-year-old Raylena Anderson, who stood on the fringes of the crowd with her grandfather and four cousins.

The ethnically diverse crowd, still mostly Arab and Muslim, seemed to have every culture represented.

Los Angeles resident Vanessa Garcia said while she does not support Hezbollah, she also doesn't condone the bombing of civilians.
