PROGRESS SOFTWARE SHIPS GUI DEVELOPMENT TOOLS FOR UNIX; PROGRESS VERSION 7 BUILDS APPLICATION BRIDGE FOR MOTIF AND MS-WINDOWS

 BEDFORD, Mass., Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Progress Software Corporation (NASDAQ: PRGS) today announced it is shipping PROGRESS Version 7 for Motif, the graphical user interface for UNIX. PROGRESS Version 7 is an advanced platform-independent GUI development tool for rapidly developing and deploying complex mission-critical applications in client/server, host-based and mixed environments. PROGRESS Version 7 support for Motif provides users with a single toolset for building portable applications for Motif and Microsoft Windows environments as well as character terminals.

 PROGRESS Version 7 is a graphical cross-platform ADE based on the powerful PROGRESS Fourth Generation Language (4GL) with new capabilities that focus on the special needs of client/server environments. These include graphical and event-driven extensions to the 4GL; and enhanced DataServer Architecture that enables developers to build database- independent applications that can be deployed with the PROGRESS RDBMS or other leading data managers; and performance-related enhancements to the PROGRESS RDBMS.
 PROGRESS Version 7 support for Motif is available immediately for the Sun OS, SCO, HP/UX, and DG/UX operating environments. PROGRESS Version 7 for Motif will be available on additional platforms in 1994 for leading vendors including: Digital Equipment, IBM, ICL, Microsoft, NCR, Sequent, Silicon Graphics, Unisys and Univel.
 PROGRESS Version 7 is priced by separate component or in bundled packages. The premier PROGRESS Version 7 developer's package is ProVISION. ProVISION, which includes the 4GL, User Interface Builder, Report Builder, Data Dictionary, Application Debugger, Procedure Editor, The RESULTS end-user query and reporting tool, Applications Compiler, Help Compiler, and Data Administration is priced beginning at $7,560 for UNIX workstations. Prices for the PROGRESS Version 7 RDBMS and DataServers to other data managers range from $1,400 to $36,130. Optional products, such as the Translation Manager that enables application translation into multiple languages, are priced separately. All PROGRESS products are priced according to a tiered user-based system.
