English professor Charles Hood last week was named a scholar in residence for his contributions inside and outside of the classroom. The announcement came during the college's annual Faculty Recognition Day program. Hood is a self-described risk-taker who uses humorous exaggeration to draw students into discussions or to help them consider a different perspective. Hood has authored books, ``Red Sky, Red Water: Powell on the Colorado'' and ``The Xopilote Cantos,'' as well as more than 150 essays, poems, book reviews and other writings. Among his writings is a chapter on local bird-watching in ``A Birder's Guide to Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, .'' Hood has identified more than 2,600 species of birds in the wild.
