PROFESSIONAL DRIVER SAUGUS GOLFER STRIKING WHILE HIS IRONS ARE HOT.

Byline: Lauren Gustus Staff Writer

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Tony Moore enjoys a weekend round of golf just as much as any ordinary guy, and his score shows it.

Saugus man is a self-professed hacker like millions of other recreational golfers who struggle with their short game.

But he's an amateur who can whack whack - According to arch-hacker James Gosling, to "...modify a program with no idea whatsoever how it works." (See whacker.) It is actually possible to do this in nontrivial circumstances if the change is small and well-defined and you are very good at glarking things from context.  the ball as far as the pros on the Professional Golfers Association Professional Golfers' Association, (with or without the apostrophe), is the usual term for a professional association in men's golf. It is often abbreviated to PGA. There are several PGAs around the world, including:

Championships next month in Mesquite, Nev.

``My scores aren't all that great,'' Moore said. ``But I have a knack for being able to hit the ball quite a ways.''

Quite a ways, indeed. Moore drove the ball 375 yards to finish in the top three at a long-drive qualifying tournament in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  last weekend, after missing the cut by just one yard in Hanford, Calif., the same weekend.

The three in San Francisco qualified for the Division III Championship in Mesquite. The top finishers there advance to the Long Drive World Championship in October, where they will compete for $80,000 in prize money and other endorsements. Last year's winner was featured in a television commercial with John Daly John Daly is the name of:

  • John Daly (golfer), a professional golfer on the PGA Tour.
.

``It could potentially be a thing where you could quit your job and have a whole new career,'' Moore said.

Moore was recently introduced to the idea by his boss and longtime golf partner, David McGraw of Demac Painting. McGraw flips on The Golf Channel instead of counting sheep when he can't sleep, and saw a future for his friend.

``I saw this thing for the long drive, rolled over and grabbed a pen, wrote it down and fell back asleep,'' McGraw said. ``In the morning I said, Hey Tony, you should try this.''

With McGraw's encouragement, and Demac's sponsorship, Moore entered his first tournament earlier this summer. Though he wasn't among the top finishers, Moore knew he was onto something as his drives reached into the 390s, enough to convince him to keep trying.

Moore plans to pick up a coach soon, and he's having a set of clubs custom-built to suit his swing and body type.

``I'm getting better,'' Moore said. ``So I think it's not too long before I reach the 400 mark. This year, I would be happy to make the world championships. Next year, I'm going to be seriously committed to winning there.''

McGraw has faith in Moore, even if the rest of his golf game isn't as sharp as his long ball.

``He's a horrible golfer,'' McGraw said, laughing. ``Like most working guys, we don't have a lot of time to golf. So, we bring a bucket of balls, and we have no idea where they are going. But, I've seen Tony hit the ball every bit as far as the pros.''

When the 1998 Nissan Open The Northern Trust Open, formally known as the Nissan Open and originally known as the Los Angeles Open, is a regular golf tournament on the PGA Tour. It is played annually in February in Pacific Palisades, California.  came to Valencia, Moore watched Daly, who leads the PGA (1) (Professional Graphics Adapter) An early IBM PC display standard for 3D processing with 640x480x256 resolution.  in driving distance, on the practice range and dreamed of hitting like him.

``I thought it would be wild to be able to hit as far as this guy,'' Moore said. ``Now I'm doing it.''
