PRODIGY AND SOFTWARE ETC. INVITE THE PUBLIC TO SEND MESSAGES THROUGH THE PRODIGY SERVICE AT NO CHARGE FOR QUICK DELIVERY TO THE TROOPS IN SOMALIA

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Now through Feb. 28, the public can send messages for quick delivery to Operation Restore Hope troops in Somalia. The messages are being sent through the Prodigy service on computers located at Software Etc. stores throughout the United States.
In support of our troops, the messages will be sent free of charge and air-shipped to the U.S. Armed Forces mail system in Africa within 48 hours for distribution to the individuals addressed.
The program, called USA CONNECT(SM), uses the electronic messaging feature of the Prodigy service, a home-computer network with more than two million members, to provide rapid delivery of letters sent to members of the Armed Services on duty in Somalia. Software Etc. has volunteered to use the computers in its stores around the country to allow people who are not members of the Prodigy service to send letters through USA CONNECT.
Each letter is typed on a computer connected to the Prodigy service via telephone lines and is sent to a special electronic mailbox at the Prodigy service. Personnel at the Software Etc. stores will be glad to help those people who are unfamiliar with this process.
There is no charge to use USA CONNECT, however capacity is limited. Prodigy may not be able to accept more than one letter per day from an individual. Letters must be addressed to specific individual.
USA CONNECT was originally created during the Gulf War to provide rapid communication between Prodigy service members and their families and friends serving overseas in Operation Desert Storm. More than 200,000 letters were handled during that operation and program was often the fastest, most consistent way to send and receive mail.
USA CONNECT is being carried out in cooperation with the U.S. Armed Forces and is offered in conjunction with IBM and Sears.
Prodigy service members can (JUMP) USA CONNECT. People who are not Prodigy service members are invited to call 800-328-4646 to find the location of the Software Etc. store nearest them.
