PROCTER & GAMBLE TO BUILD DIAPER PLANT IN POLAND

CINCINNATI, Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The Procter & Gamble Company (NYSE: PG) (P&G) today announced that it has purchased approximately 40 acres in Warsaw for a plant to manufacture Pampers diapers in Poland. The company said it initially will invest $50 to $60 million to acquire the site, develop it, and install manufacturing lines. Substantial additional investment is expected at the site as the business grows. This will be P&G's first local manufacturing facility in Poland.
P&G began operations in Poland in 1991 through a joint venture to market imported P&G products. Since that time, P&G has introduced Pampers diapers, Vidal Sassoon Wash & Go, Head & Shoulders and Pantene Pro-V shampoos, Old Spice fragrance, Always feminine protection pads, Ariel and Vizir laundry detergents, Lenor fabric softener, Mr. Proper household cleaner and Blend-a-Med toothpaste.
"When we started our business in Poland, we told local officials we would produce P&G products locally when the time was right," said John E. Pepper, president of P&G. "This investment follows through on that promise and underscores P&G's confidence in and commitment to this market for the long term."
The site includes a partially finished building that the company will repair and complete to house the Pampers production lines. P&G said that the plant will initially employ approximately 300 and generate as many as 650 to 750 additional jobs at P&G suppliers. P&G currently has 170 employees in Poland.
P&G said that product from the plant will be sold in Poland but the majority will be exported primarily to other countries in the region.
In September 1992, Procter & Gamble worldwide reached the milestone of $30 billion in annual sales. The company makes and markets a wide range of products for both consumer and institutional use. Business outside the U.S. now accounts for about 50% of the company's sales. P&G has on-the-ground operations in 54 countries and sells its products in more than 140 countries.
