PROCTER & GAMBLE PAYS TRIBUTE TO BLACK FAMILIES WITH HOLIDAY TV SPECIAL
CINCINNATI, Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Procter & Gamble Co. (P&G) continues to design programs that realize the company's commitment to the black family, the company said today.
Recognizing the strength of this significant consumer base, the Cincinnati-based corporation, in cooperation with the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) has added a meaningful dimension to the Black Family Reunion Celebration (BFRC), a major program initiative of NCNW.
During the Thanksgiving holiday season families nationwide will view a two-hour musical tribute to the black family, "Gladys Knight's Holiday Family Reunion Concert," sponsored in part by P&G and several of its prominent brands. A host of black entertainers take part with musical performances, skits and special family messages. Among them are the show's host, Gladys Knight, Bill Cosby and his TV family (the Huxtables), Melba Moore, Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Debbie Allen and Dionne Warwick.
"Black consumers tend to be brand loyal as well as family oriented," said Buddy Tucker, associate manager of target marketing at P&G. "Much of their product brand usage originated with their parents or grandparents and has been used by several generations. Our aim is to acknowledge this loyalty."
Since the inception of the Black Family Reunion Celebration, in 1986, P&G has been the major national sponsor. Commencing as a two-day cultural event, in Washington, the BFRC has evolved into a series of programmatic festivals conducted in several major cities that include Atlanta, Chicago, Cincinnati, Los Angeles, Memphis, Tenn., Philadelphia and Washington. More than 5 million people have attended this event.
"Our involvement in the BFRC gives us a platform to address issues important to the black family and extend self-help counsel," added Tucker.
The "Gladys Knight Holiday Family Reunion Concert" special is one of the primary shows developed around the black family. The show emphasizes the importance of the family foundation and its sustenance. High points include electrifying performances by Gladys Knight, The Boys, BeBe and CeCe Winans, David Peaston, Tracie Spencer, Keith Washington, The Winans, Vanessa Williams and Dionne Warwick. Also inspiring are the messages conveyed during the "family reunion moments."
BeBe Winans said, "The definition of the family is 'unity.' We were raised to love one another, respect one another and to need one another. And because of that you can achieve and weather the storms of life, because you know the family is going to be there."
"We agree with BeBe and the other celebrities featured in the special," said Tucker. "The black family is synonymous with love and we at P&G recognize and support this phenomenon."
Brand sponsors of the "Gladys Knight Holiday Family Reunion Concert" are Camay, Cascade, Cheer, Crest, Ivory Bar, Mr. Clean and Pampers. Check local listings for the airing date and time in your area.
