manufacturers, Hitachi Ltd. has announced plans to license and resell Hewlett-Packard Company workstations, calling them Hitachi 9000 V series. The workstations will be sold and supported by Hitachi primarily in the Japanese market. In addition to the workstations, Hitachi has developed new servers, both of which will be loaded with the latest version of HP-UX HP's version of Unix that runs on its 9000 family. It is based on SVID and incorporates features from BSD Unix along with several HP innovations.

and the most recent, powerful PA-RISC (Precision Architecture-RISC) A proprietary RISC-based CPU architecture from HP that was introduced in 1986. It is the foundation of HP's 3000 and 9000 computer families. See IA-64. (2) chip, the PA-7200 (120 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc. ).

WORKSTATIONS

The two HP workstation products Hitachi intends to license are a high-end, mini-tower model and a high-performance desktop model. The VQ210 and VQ200 high-end, mini-tower models employ the newest and most powerful PA7200 PA-RISC processor. They can both support two processors and realize an industry high performance level of 168/139 SPECint92, 269/222 SPECfp92. Five desktop models are also available which employ the PA-7100LC processor.

Each model can be loaded with a maximum of 4 GB of hard disk, Ethernet (10Base5), SCSI-2, and audio features. In addition, Hitachi has developed a small desktop model compatible in the binary level with HP workstations using the PA-7100LC processor.

"PA-RISC is an excellent, competitive architecture that can handle the technical innovations that will challenge the RISC field well into the 21st century," said Mr. Kenichi Furumaya, Board Director and General Manager of the Information Systems Group, Hitachi, Ltd. "We are dedicated to increasing the use of PA-RISC, with support from PRO."

"This is a perfect example of the power of an organization like PRO where members can complement each other's expertise in their respective technologies," said James G. McCabe, president of PRO. "Hitachi reselling HP products in Japan benefits both companies and provides customers with solutions tuned for their specific needs."

SUPPORTS HIGH-SPEED GRAPHICS

All of the workstation models come standard with 2D/3D wire frame support. In addition, all workstations come with a graphics library that supports the latest accelerators and graphics systems. These include V ISUALIZE, HCRX-8Z, HCRX-24Z, HRCX-8, HRCX-24, integrated color graphics and an improved graphics library.

SUPPORTS LATEST VERSION OF HP-UX

HP's latest versions of both HP-UX 10.0 and HP-UX 9.0 run on all models at the binary level. As a result, the 3,000-plus independent software vendor (ISV (Independent Software Vendor) A person or company that develops software. It implies an organization that specializes in software only and is not part of a computer systems or hardware manufacturer. ) applications in the Japanese market seamlessly integrate with the Hitachi 9000 V. In addition, the front end interface for Japanese input and output, and Hitachi's broad range of peripheral equipment and high-speed network adapter connection support functions are included in HP-UX, supplied by Hitachi. The open-systems HP-UX environment and broad range of software applications ported to HP-UX ensures customers investment protection for their current, as well as future, computer purchases.

Also, high-speed network adapters, such as ATM (155 Mbps), 100 BaseTX, 100VGT-AnyLAN, and FDDI (Fiber Distributed Data Interface) Often pronounced "fiddy," it was a LAN and MAN access method that had its heyday in the mid-1990s. FDDI was an ANSI standard token passing network that transmitted 100 Mbps over optical fiber up to 10 kilometers.  are supported to improve communication performance.

PERIPHERAL EQUIPMENT

SERVERS

Hitachi intends to resell three-models of wide-range, scalable servers drawing upon the power of HP's PA-RISC microprocessors. The entry-level Model (VE class servers) employs the PA-7100LC processor and comes with a maximum of two hard disks and a maximum of two removable disks such as DAT, CD-ROM, or floppy disk in the system unit. Based on a remote control technology, automatic configuration function, automatic power function and system operation and management are greatly simplified. The mid-range Model, VR class servers, employs the latest and most powerful PA-7200 100MHz processor and can be expanded to a maximum of four processors. The high-end Model, VT server, can be expanded to a maximum of 12 PA-7100 90MHz processors. High-speed processing, such as transaction or batch processing (1) Performing a particular operation automatically on a group of files all at once rather than manually opening, editing and saving one file at a time. For example, graphics software that converts a selection of images from one format to another would be a batch processing utility. , can be easily achieved with this model.

All of the servers can construct high-speed networks by using fibre channels and ATMs. The latest version of HP-UX 10.0 is supported, as well as a broad range of software applications. Additional leading-edge software necessary for executing mission critical applications, such as MC/Service-Guard, MC/LockManager and ORACLE Parallel Server A version of the Oracle database system designed for massively parallel processors (MPPs). It allows multiple CPUs to access a single database.
