``It was planned and we know they were talking about it all night long,'' prison spokesman Lt. Ron Nipper nipper

and Sgt. Michael Ayala was knocked unconscious, officials said. All were treated at a hospital and released, officials said.

Inmates are unhappy about the prison enforcing strict time schedules for eating, working and other activities, Nipper said.

``Everything is set by a new time schedule and they are not pleased with the new system,'' Nipper said. ``We're trying to be more proactive than reactive and this new schedule provides a safer approach. It offers more security.''

The attacks occurred about 8:10 a.m. Monday in the prison's maximum- security Level D, officials said.

While the fight was going on, Ayala was attacked by two other inmates and knocked unconscious. Ayala could not identify the pair.

Nabors and Martinez are both gang members, as are the men in the next cell, who are suspects in the attack on Ayala, Nipper said.

Nabors and Martinez were transferred to California Corrections Institution in Tehachapi.

Chase, Vasquez and Ayala are on sick leave until they recover from their wounds, officials said.

If the inmates who attacked Ayala are identified, they will be sent to Tehachapi as well.
