``We're preparing for (a successful run in the Southern Section Div. IV playoffs), and what better way to start the season than by beating St. Francis,'' El-Saden said. ``They're probably more skilled than we are, but I think we played with a lot more intensity, especially in the second half.

``Once we got down, we knew we had to step up our game. ... We knew we could play with these guys.''

Jeff Buddenbohn, the reigning Daily News Player of the Year, gave St. Francis - the preseason No. 7 team in Student Sports' National Fab 50 poll - a 29th-minute lead when La Canada failed to clear a ball near the top of its box.

La Canada was in control the rest of the game, and the Spartans tied the score when Jamaal Akbarut tucked a ball under the crossbar from 30 yards out in the 63rd minute.

``It's always a special way to start the season by beating St. Francis,'' said La Canada coach Don Sheppard, whose team fell 1-0 to the Knights a year ago. ``Last year, we were on our heels the whole game, and this year we played them straight up, and from start to finish the boys never let up.''
