Major U.S. commercial broadcasting company. It was formed in 1926 by RCA Corp., General Electric Co. (GE), and Westinghouse and was the first U.S. company to operate a broadcast network.
Senior Vice President of Prime-Time Programs Jamie McDermott is taking a leave of absence and may resign from the network.

McDermott, 31, "will either return to NBC or pursue other opportunities," the General Electric Co. unit said.

Her departure would be a blow to the network. McDermott brought the top-rated show "Friends" to NBC.

"I've come to the point in my career where I want to think about my plans for the future," McDermott said in a statement.

NBC holds a commanding lead in February's so-called sweeps rating period, which is more than halfway completed, partly because of a popular Thursday night lineup that includes "Friends."

The show attracts the 18-to-49 age group for which advertisers pay a premium. The sweeps ratings are used by advertisers to determine rates.

President Robert Iger said, "We have not entered into a contract with Jamie McDermott. We understand she still is under contract with NBC."

However, Iger added that "Prime time could use some improvement."

Ted Harbert is currently president of ABC Entertainment.

"It is not our intention to fire Ted Harbert," Iger said. "He will have a job in the company. It is not clear that Jamie McDermott is the direction we are heading."

McDermott is the daughter of successful television programmer Jay Tarses.

ABC is in second place among 18- to 49-year-old viewers. News Corp.'s Fox Broadcasting is close behind in third place for that viewer group.
