PRICE WATERHOUSE SELECTS IBM AS WORLDWIDE OPERATING SYSTEMS PROVIDER
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM today announced that it has been selected by Price Waterhouse to be the company's total worldwide PC operating systems provider. The deal, which involves Price Waterhouse's 35,000 worldwide PCs, includes the purchase of over 20,000 OS/2(A) 2.0 licenses.
"The selection of OS/2 by such a prestigious firm as Price Waterhouse is a further indication of the great momentum building for OS/2," says Lee Reiswig, assistant general manager, IBM's Personal Systems Programming. "OS/2 continues to be embraced by everyone from large corporations to single users because of its stability, reliability and powerful capability."
"We are very excited about being able to take advantage of a full, 32-bit preemptive multitasking operating system such as OS/2 2.0," says Sheldon Laube, national director of information and technology for Price Waterhouse. "Within the firm, there has been a groundswell of interest in OS/2 since its introduction. A lot of people can't wait to start using the product."
As part of its global software licensing agreements with other industry vendors, Price Waterhouse also purchased the right to use certain current and future 32-bit OS/2 applications, including word processing, database and spreadsheet programs, so their PC users can experience the benefits of this advanced operating system immediately.
Under the terms of the agreement, in order to meet Price Waterhouse's total needs IBM also will provide Price Waterhouse with DOS and Windows(B), in addition to OS/2.
"Around the world, we have PCs that run on older 8086 and 286 processors as well as the newer 386 and 486 processors and our computing goal is to provide the best possible operating environment for everybody," continues Laube. "IBM was the only operating system provider that was flexible enough to respond to our diversified needs."
OS/2 2.0 is an advanced 32-bit operating system that supports DOS, Windows and OS/2 applications in a single package. This platform offers true, preemptive multitasking -- allowing concurrent execution of multiple software programs -- and enables users to choose from tens of thousands of available applications.
