``Finally,'' Preston said. ``It's been too long. We all wanted this.''

Complications with paperwork prevented Preston from practicing with the Kingsmen (1-2, 1-0) until a few days before their first game. Senior Gabe Solberg started the season opener, but Solberg injured in·jure

``He almost improves by the minute,'' CLU coach Scott Squires said of Preston.

``I hadn't played in so long, the first three games has just been getting back into it,'' Preston said. ``It's coming together now.''

Jeremy Watties helped things come together for Preston late in the first half. Preston was sacked sack 1

twice, threw an interception and failed to get his team within 40 yards of the end zone before he connected with Watties on a 51-yard pass with 2:49 left before halftime, putting the ball on the La Verne 4. Sophomore running back Tyler Ruiz, who finished with 42 yards on a team-high 14 carries, ran the ball in on the next play for the game's first score.

The Kingsmen had the ball back within a minute, and Preston went to work again. His short pass to Devin Martin went for a 22-yard gain as Martin weaved through the Leopards defense. An 11-yard pass to Robert Fisher advanced CLU to the 6, but Preston was sacked on the next play. With time running out, the Kingsmen settled for the field goal and a 10-0 lead at the half.

The lack of points for the opposition was just as encouraging as the lead for CLU, which had given up a combined 83 points in its first two losses. La Verne (1-3, 0-2) was held scoreless until Justin Wolchief's 95-yard scoring run with 2:43 left in the game. The Kingsmen blocked the extra-point attempt, just as they had done on a Leopards field-goal attempt in the first quarter.

Nick Lane caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from Preston, and Preston had a 10-yard scoring run to increase CLU's lead to 24-0 entering the final quarter. Martin, who finished with a team-high 65 yards rushing, ran 44 yards for the Kingsmen's final score.
