Society Editor Encino attorney Lee Kanon Alpert was named the recipient of the 41st annual Fernando Award on Friday night at a black tie gala at the Warner Center Marriott. Alpert was chosen from five finalists, including community activist Rose Goldwater, Winnetka businesswoman Ruth Richter, Woodland Hills attorney Bob Scott and Woodland Hills developer Robert D. Voit, for the Valley's most important civic award. All are regarded as outstanding Valley philanthropists, organizers said. ``All of the candidates have helped us get ready for the new century,'' said Irwin Rosenberg, president of the Fernando organization. ``Between the five of them are 200 years of volunteer efforts.'' The nearly 400 guests at the annual gala included state U.S. Rep. Howard P. ``Buck'' McKeon, R-Santa Clarita; state Sen. Cathie Wright, R-Simi Valley; City Attorney James Hahn; District Attorney Gil Garcetti; Supervisors Michael Antonovich and Zev Yaroslavsky; and council members Laura Chick, Cindy Miscikowski, Hal Bernson and Richard Alarcon. Businessman Steve Soboroff stood in for Mayor Richard Riordan. Former state Sen. Ed Davis also attended. Alpert was accompanied by his wife, Arlene, and sons Scott, 21, and Brett, 24. Alpert, 53, is founding shareholder of the Encino firm Alpert, Barr and Gross. He is working on the framework for Los Angeles neighborhood councils, chairs the board of the Encino-Tarzana Medical Center, is a member of the city Building and Safety Commission, and is outgoing president of the advisory board at California State University, Northridge CSUN offers a variety of programs leading to bachelor's degrees in 61 fields and master's degrees in 42 fields.
