PRESSURE IS ON FENWICK : NEW NORTHRIDGE COACH INHERITS HIGH EXPECTATIONS.Byline: Bill Schlotter Daily News Staff Writer For new Cal State Northridge football coach Jim Fenwick, today marks a hiatus in recruiting, hiring, budgeting and other administrative paper-shuffling. The former Valley College coach, hired in January, gets his first on-field look at his new team today with the beginning of spring practice at North Campus Stadium. ``The focus will be on learning a new system,'' said Fenwick. ``Now, we get a chance to run around and use a football.'' After a two-year taxi down a rugged runway, former coach Dave Baldwin Dave Baldwin was the head football coach of San Jose State University from 1997-2000. During his tenure, he had three straight wins over Stanford (including their rosebowl season of 1999). In 1997, SJSU upset No. finally got the Matadors I-AA football program airborne in 1996. And as the team soared, finishing third in the Big Sky Conference with a 7-4 record, so did expectations for 1997. But Baldwin, who resigned in December to take over at San Jose San Jose, city, United States San Jose (sănəzā`, săn hōzā`), city (1990 pop. 782,248), seat of Santa Clara co., W central Calif.; founded 1777, inc. 1850. State, won't have to live up to those high hopes. If Fenwick inherited great expectations, he also inherited a cast of players who seem capable of approaching them. Returning are four All-Big Sky second-team selections and three honorable mentions among a total of 15 returning starters. Heading the list is Big Sky second-team quarterback Aaron Flowers, who played for Fenwick at Valley and earned conference newcomer-of-the-year honors last season after passing for 3,540 yards and 30 touchdowns. Flowers completed almost 60 percent of his passes - and there were a lot of them as the Matadors put the ball in the air an average of just under 40 times a game. Though there will be changes this year, the Matadors will continue to be a throwing team, Fenwick said. ``To the average eye, our offense is going to look very similar,'' Fenwick said. Two key members of the Matadors receiving corps are also back, including All-Big Sky second teamer Cameron Perry (57 catches, 710 yards, 9 TDs) - who also played for Fenwick at Valley - and Big Sky honorable mention Jerome Henry (47 catches, 767 yards, 4 TDs).
