PRESS BOX.COLUMN: PRESS BOX FOOTBALL Versatile Gaffney is re-signed by Patriots The New England Patriots re-signed veteran wide receiver Jabar Gaffney. The 27-year-old Gaffney played four seasons with Houston before he signed with the Patriots as a free agent in October 2006. Last season, he played in 16 games with seven starts and caught 36 passes for 449 yards and a career-high five touchdowns. In his career, he has caught 218 passes for 2,600 yards and 13 TDs. His 36 receptions last season tied for fifth on the team, while his five touchdown catches ranked fourth on the club. Coach Bill Belichick said Gaffney is a good fit for the Patriots' offense, calling him versatile and dependable. COLLEGES Becker's Suber is NAC Player of Year Becker College junior guard Travis Suber was named the North Atlantic Conference Player of the Year in a vote of the league's coaches. In addition, coach Brian Gorman shared Coach of the Year honors with Maine Maritime's Chris Murphy. Suber led the league in steals with nearly four per game in conference play and ranked second in the league in scoring (22.2 points) and assists (5.15). Holy Cross pitching legend Owen Carroll has been selected as a Vintage-Era inductee into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in Lubbock, Texas. Over his four-year career (1922-1925) with the Crusaders, Carroll compiled a record of 50-2 and threw 16 shutouts. He also captained the Crusaders to an 18-0 record in 1924. Carroll still ranks first at HC in games started in a season (16) and is the winningest pitcher in school history, while his .960 winning percentage is also tops. Susie Whelan has been named assistant field hockey coach at Holy Cross.
