PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARS REAGAN FOUNDATION TO AWARD STUDENTS.

Byline: Joseph Giordono Staff Writer

SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - The Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation is scheduled today to announce the names of 84 Ventura County high school students honored as the first members of the Presidential Library Scholars program.

The winners, from 20 high schools throughout Ventura County, will be honored at a May 20 dinner at the Reagan Presidential Library, where three of the students will be awarded $5,000 college scholarships.

Mark Burson, executive director of the Reagan Foundation, said the program was founded as a way to recognize outstanding students in the community and honor former President Reagan's vision.

``If these are the leaders of tomorrow, our future is indeed bright,'' Burson said. ``This is a way to continually keep the local community involved with our efforts and show the community that we give back to them.''

Burson said the Reagan Presidential Library Scholars program is the first of its kind in the nation. His hope is that eventually all of the other presidential libraries will start similar scholarship programs and combine to award national prizes.

``Our goal is that if this program is successful, all of the other libraries will follow us and make this a national scholarship competition. Hopefully, it will wind up with national awards presented by the President at an event in Washington,'' Burson said.

The Reagan Scholars program was initiated in February, when all Ventura County high school students who met eligibility requirements were invited to apply for the scholarships and write a 500-word essay on the leader who most inspired them.

Essay subjects included Mother Teresa, Joan of Arc Joan of Arc, Fr.
