PRESIDENT OF ITALY COMING TO CHICAGO TO RECEIVE HONORARY DEGREE FROM
 LOYOLA UNIVERSITY CHICAGO
 CHICAGO, Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Francesco Cossiga, president of the Republic of Italy since 1985, is coming to the United States and Chicago to receive a honorary doctor of humane letters degree from Loyola University Chicago, Saturday, Jan. 11.
 Cossiga will be honored at Loyola's largest-ever Mid-Year Convocation. The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. and will be held at Medinah Temple, 600 N. Wabash Ave., Chicago.
 Cossiga is being recognized for bringing Catholic values to his political decision making. The main concerns of his career have been institutional policy, defense, and security. Cossiga will address the graduates.
 Honoring Cossiga will have special significance since 1992 is the 30th anniversary of Loyola's Rome Center of Liberal Arts.
 One of Loyola's five campuses, the Rome Center annually hosts some 300 students on a five-acre campus on Via Massimi in Monte Mario, four miles from downtown Rome. The faculty is composed of Loyola professors and other American and European scholars who are specialists residing in Rome.
 Cossiga's political career began when he was elected a deputy to the Italian Parliament in 1958. He served in the Bureau of the Parliamentary Christian Democratic Group and has been Italy's minister of the interior.
 More than 1,250 students are expected to receive degrees at Mid-Year


Convocation.
 The commencement address will be given by John A. Coleman, S.J., a senior research fellow at the Institute for the Advanced Study of Religion at the University of Chicago and one of America's most respected scholars in the field of sociology of religion.
 Loyola University Chicago, founded by Jesuits in 1870, is dedicated to higher education and health care. It has grown to include 10 schools and colleges, with four Chicago area campuses including an academic medical center and a campus in Rome, Italy. There are more than 15,800 students in its undergraduate, graduate and professional schools, and with more than 9,600 employees, the university is one of the largest employers in the Chicago area. It is the largest of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States.
 Loyola has more than 100,000 alumni, living in all 50 states and throughout the world.
