PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES HEALTHSOUTH BOARD MEMBER TO HEAD NATIONAL HEALTH CARE CAMPAIGN

BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Former Ohio Gov. Richard F. Celeste will assume the leadership of the Democratic National Committee's National Health Care Campaign.
In his new role, Celeste will coordinate efforts to build public support for the healthcare reform plan to be outlined by President Clinton in September.
Celeste, a two-term governor of Ohio, has been a director of HEALTHSOUTH Rehabilitation Corporation (NYSE: HRC) since 1990. The Birmingham-based company is one of the nation's largest providers of rehabilitative healthcare services. HEALTHSOUTH currently operates inpatient and outpatient facilities in more than 170 locations in 30 states and has treated sports superstars such as Bo Jackson, Joe Montana and Charles Barkley.
"We are extremely pleased that Governor Celeste has been chosen for this vitally important position," said Richard M. Scrushy, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of HEALTHSOUTH. "He has long been an advocate for cost-effective healthcare delivery systems, such as rehabilitative healthcare, and understands how savings can be achieved by utilizing these systems. I know he will communicate this message very well."
The Democratic National Committee has earmarked $3 million for the effort to sell the president's healthcare reform plan to the American public. Celeste will be in charge of a massive media effort as well as grass-roots strategies such as town hall meetings and forums.
"The American public needs to know that there are already outstanding examples of ways to save money in our healthcare system today. My experience with HEALTHSOUTH and rehabilitative healthcare has given me greater awareness of the answers to our cost problem. The president's plan will build upon what is right in our current system in the effort to provide healthcare security for all of us," said Celeste.
Celeste resigned his position as a HEALTHSOUTH director effective Aug. 23. There currently are no plans to name his replacement.
