WASHINGTON, May 26 /PRNewswire/ -- President Clinton, five members of the Cabinet and 127 members of Congress were among 7,300 visitors who kicked tires, looked under hoods and road-tested new cars and trucks here in a two-day auto quality festival sponsored by the UAW, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors.
Called "Drive American Quality," the program was hosted by some 150 UAW and company employees from auto facilities in 22 states.
Nearly 1,000 visitors to the event took the 4-mile test drive in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol.
The unprecedented test drive program was designed to provide government officials the opportunity to experience first-hand the quality cars and trucks being built by the UAW, Chrysler, Ford and General Motors.
The U.S. domestic auto industry supports 1.4 million U.S. jobs and an estimated $50 billion in wages.
