SIMI VALLEY Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  - About 50 preschoolers celebrated Earth Day a few days late Friday, planting flowers and an oak tree at Rancho Santa Susana Santa Susana can refer to several places:
  • The Santa Susana Mountains in southern California
  • Santa Susana Pass, running through the abovementioned mountains
  • Santa Susana Field Laboratory, near Los Angeles, a test facility for rockets and (formerly) nuclear reactors
 Community Park.

The youngsters from the park preschool programs also collected bits of nature - sticks, berries and leaves - to make nature collages.

``It's cool to collect nature,'' said Mykel Davis, 5. ``I like trees because they help the world and make the world beautiful.''

Cody Daste, 5, had an idea about how future generations might enjoy the new oak tree, which had been purchased at a discount by some of the parents.

``Maybe someday they can make a tree house in it,'' he said.

As the sun finally emerged Friday morning, the children sat in groups on blankets creating their works of art.

``We just feel that kids need to have all kinds of different experiences,'' said teacher Kristen Castellano. ``Even though they're small, they can make a difference in the world.''
