State tennis tournaments

set to begin Thursday

Churchill's boys will be one of the top contenders at the OSAA OSAA Oregon School Activities Association

, who placed second at the 4A tournament last year, qualified two singles players and three doubles teams for the tournament, which runs Thursday and Friday at Portland Tennis Center before moving to Tualatin Hills Tennis Center for the finals on Saturday.

Churchill freshman Chris Wiechert is seeded third in boys singles at his first state tournament. Lancer senior Ben Korteweg, who lost to Wiechert in the district final, is seeded fourth. Korteweg won the state consolation title last year.

Churchill's Carl Brehm and Chase Thomet are seeded second in doubles. This is Brehm's fourth trip to state with his fourth different partner. The Lancers' Hank Brehm and Mathias Newell, who lost in the district final, and Zach Lantz and Matt Walker are both unseeded teams.

On the girls side, Churchill's Kody Jo Jaffarian and Stephanie Ballman are seeded second after winning the district title. The 5A girls play at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center from Thursday through Saturday.

No Sheldon or South Eugene players are seeded entering the 6A tournament, which runs at the same sites as the 5A event.

The 4A/3A/2A/1A tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Eugene Swim and Tennis Club.

The headliner at that tournament is North Bend's Kelcy McKenna, who is looking to win her fourth straight state title. McKenna, the No. 1 seed, begins her final state tournament against Baker's Nini Valerio. Stephanie Babij of Ontario is the No. 2 seed.

Vale's Luci DeLong and Evelyn Kaaen are the No. 1 seed in girls doubles, while Shannin and LeighAnne MacCarthy of Central are seeded second.

 junior Cody Ferguson, who won state as a freshman and lost to Morse in the final last year, is the No. 2 seed.

Oregon Episcopal School's Ryan Nedrow and Jason Stack are the top seed in boys doubles, and Josh Guckenberger and Hayden Rear of Marist are the No. 2 seed.

Poole, a 6-foot-5 forward, averaged 20 points per game as a senior to earn first-team all-Southwest Conference and second-team all-state honors. Poole led the Midwestern League in scoring as a junior when he earned first-team all-league honors.

Lane Community College's Collin Cram has signed a letter of intent to compete in track and field at Long Beach State. Cram, a Siuslaw graduate who was The Register-Guard's prep male athlete of the year Athlete of the Year

Brackets nearly complete

for state baseball, softball

The brackets will be completed today for the state playoffs in baseball and softball. The 6A, 5A and 4A playoffs begin on Friday, and the 2A/1A games begin on Saturday. Many teams have a first-round bye, so the first full day of playoffs for all classifications is Tuesday.
