South Medford takes title

The top-ranked South Medford boys basketball team took a break from Southwest Conference

Singler, the 6-foot-9 senior who has signed with Duke, had 34 points in the championship game as the Panthers defeated Lake Howell of Winter Park, Fla., 77-72 on Sunday. Lake Howell featured two players who have signed with national champion Florida.

Singler had 36 points, 14 rebounds and four steals in the tournament opener as South Medford defeated host Glendale 82-77 on Friday night. Singler added 22 points, 12 rebounds and seven assists in a semifinal victory over Raleigh-Egypt of Memphis, Tenn., which was ranked No. 22 in the nation by USA Today.

In three tournament games, Singler shot 31-of-42 from the field and 29-of-36 from the free-thow line for a total of 92 points. South Medford point guard Michael Harthun also was an all-tournament selection after scoring 20 points in the final.

Irish face Australian squad

The sixth-ranked Sheldon girls basketball team is scheduled to play host to the Jannali Basketball Club of Sydney, Australia, in an exhibition game at 7 o'clock tonight.

The Irish varsity will take on the Jannali U-18 club, while the Sheldon JVs will meet the U-16 squad at 5:15 p.m. The traveling Australian team has played seven games on its current tour.

South's Kerr-Daly takes 13th

South Eugene's Eamonn Kerr-Daly finished 13th out of 41 competitors at the Skadi Cup 5K Classic nordic ski race at Teacup Lake near Mount Hood this past weekend.

Kerr-Daly covered the 5,000-meter course in a time of 18 minutes, 6.7 seconds. Summit's Tom Smith won the boys race in 14:14.4, while Summit's Isabel Smith took first place in the girls race at 17:54.8.

Daletas wins at Hoodoo

Pleasant Hill's Scotty Daletas was the overall winner in the Emerald League's giant slalom giant slalom

Daletas covered both runs in a time of 1:16.90, followed by Oakridge's Diego Cunsolo (second, 1:18.24) and South Eugene's Will Mattson (third, 1:19.16). The Axemen's Jasper Newton placed fifth.

In the girls race, South Eugene had five skiers place in the top 10, including Allison Kratka (third, 1:28.31), Ericka Sohlberg (fifth, 1:31.64), Tatum Sohlberg (sixth, 1:31.65), Allison Coughlin (eighth, 1:32.57) and Kiren Lee (10th, 1:33.60). Sutherlin's Nikki Hyland placed fourth in 1:29.56.
