scheduled to run Friday through Sunday.

``The condition should have been recognized a lot sooner than it was,'' said Amann, who was hired as the course superintendent last August.

Under his supervision, the club's crew of 30 employees has worked from sunrise to sundown, mowing, fertilizing, irrigating, landscaping and maintaining bunkers to restore the course to prime condition.

Ironically, El Nino's torrential rains last winter and spring flushed some of the salt out of the ground while the crew used drinking-quality water to nurture the grass.

A high-tech computer system was reprogrammed to ensure certain areas did not receive too much sunlight, which damages greens.

The total cost: $150,000 a month.

But with organizers expecting double last year's attendance of approximately 6,000 for Ventura County's only major pro tournament, Amann said it is money well spent.

``We want the course in the finest playing condition and aesthetic appearance,'' he said. ``CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  and ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network  will be there with their cameras and the blimp blimp: see airship.  will be flying overhead taking shots. It's got to look good.''

Media response has reached record levels, organizers said, because Greg ``The Shark'' Norman, the tournament's host, will be competing for the first time since undergoing arthroscopic surgery Arthroscopic Surgery Definition

Pro-am rounds are scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, giving corporate sponsors a change to swing with the pros.

The shootout consists of different rules each day: alternate shot, where partners switch back and forth hitting from their own and each others' lies; best ball, where only the lowest score per pair is tabulated for each hole; and scrambles, where the ball in the worst location after each shot is positioned next to the teammate's better shot.

``If they hit a bad shot, it's not a big deal,'' said Gene Molenkamp, senior event coordinator for Peter Jacobsen.

The 180-acre course is lined with more than 1,000 transplanted oak trees, up to 40 feet tall and seven feet in diameter.

Behind the fourth tee is Lake Sherwood, 165 surface acres of water.

``I want it to be maintained in tournament conditions year-round,'' Amann said. ``(Club members) pay to play and they're entitled to have a finely conditioned golf course.''
