PREPAREDNESS IS THE KEY TO SURVIVING A MAJOR QUAKE

PREPAREDNESS IS THE KEY TO SURVIVING A MAJOR QUAKE
SAN JOSE, Calif., July 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Experts are urging the owners of homes and businesses throughout California to get ready now for what may prove to be the Golden State's long-expected "big one."
Several large earthquakes, which have rumbled through the desert region of Southern California and speculation that a much larger quake may be imminent somewhere along the San Andreas faultline, have seismologists warning residents to act quickly to prepare their homes or businesses for the possibility of a major event.
Studies also show that a majority of quake and post-quake damage results from overturned furniture, falling water heaters and fires fueled by natural gas leaks. The owners of homes and businesses should act quickly to secure their property from major and possibly uninsured losses from these quake-related causes.
In response to that urgent need, USA Darco -- a leading source of American-made hardware for the home -- has announced the release of the "SEISMIK"(TM) earthquake preparedness product line. The product line is available now at all Ace Hardware, Crown Hardware and Sentry stores, and includes:
-- Water Heater Restraint strap kit, which dampens shift and resists horizontal displacement during an earthquake, thereby reducing the risk of water heater collapse, water damage and gas leakage. In the case where the water supply is cut off for an extended period of time, a secured, undamaged water heater can supply approximately 52 gallons of perfectly good drinking water to the home occupants.
-- Cabinet & Clock Restraint, used to secure heavy furniture or fixtures to walls, lessening the risk of damage or injury from quake-toppled furniture.
-- Gas/Water Shut-Off Wrench can be used to quickly shut gas and water at the inflow meters, preventing expensive water damage from broken pipes or disastrous post-quake fires caused by the leakage of natural gas.
When used as directed, "SEISMIK" earthquake preparedness products can greatly reduce the threat or degree of damage resulting from a seismic event. Homeowners are also encouraged to maintain sufficient supplies of fresh water, battery-operated flashlights and radios, and non-refrigerated foods for use in the emergency period immediately following a major earthquake.
