Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

There will be nothing but smiling faces at Birmingham High of Lake Balboa's track banquet A banquet is a large public meal or feast, complete with main courses and desserts. ``Those are hard banquets because you have one group sitting there a little disappointed that they didn't win and another ready to celebrate,'' Birmingham coach Scott King Scott Glenndale Martin King (born June 25, 1967 in Thunder Bay, Ontario) was a professional ice hockey goaltender.  of a lot easier when both teams win.''

That is what happened Thursday, for the first time in school history. The boys defended their City title from the previous season. The girls had won in 2001.

Birmingham is the third school in City Section history to sweep the team titles in one season, joining Dorsey of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  (1996 and 1997) and Taft of Woodland Hills (2000).

It came down to the last event for Birmingham to edge Dorsey 89-81 in the boys' competition.

Birmingham led by 10 points entering the 1,600-meter relay. Dorsey won the relay, but Birmingham came in second. All the Patriots had to do was finish in the top six. Some Dorsey athletes, unclear of the points for second place in the relay, began celebrating before being told that Birmingham was the champion.

The boys took control late in the meet when Christian Wise won the triple jump to put the Patriots ahead for the first time.

Then King, who has developed a tactical expertise for these meets in his 29 years of coaching track, advised 3,200 runner Mehdi Taieb-Brahim to try only for third place.  more points and a comfortable edge heading into the final event.

Wise and Damian Rinaldi (800 and 1,600) were the only Patriots to take first place on the boys' side. However, Birmingham has long been known for its depth.

``Having kids in a lot of different events was a real key for us,'' King said. ``Some of the other schools had great athletes, probably better athletes than we had, but they had them in only five or six events. We had them spread out across the board, and it gave us a big advantage.''

The boys had participants in 13 of 15 events, including multiple-event runners such as Rinaldi.

``I really wanted the City championship,'' Rinaldi said. ``We have prom (today) and it makes it so much better to go to prom as City champs.''
