PREP TRACK AND FIELD NOTEBOOK: HIGHLAND TRIP ABROAD CANCELED HAWAII, AUSTRALIA OFF SCHEDULE.Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer Highland track athletes worked hard all season to prove themselves worthy of a special experience. The Bulldogs planned to take 10 of their top performers to competitions in Hawaii and Australia in the next month. Now, none will go. The trips were canceled because they didn't gain approval early enough to allow the purchase of airline tickets, according to according to prep. 1. Andres Aguinaga said. ``We were all excited when they first told us about the meets. But something happened and we can't go. We're all a little disappointed.'' Highland has been taking its track athletes on such trips for years. Last year they went to Vancouver and the year before to Hawaii. They turn the trips into opportunities for education, bringing students to Pearl Harbor Pearl Harbor, land-locked harbor, on the southern coast of Oahu island, Hawaii, W of Honolulu; one of the largest and best natural harbors in the E Pacific Ocean. In the vicinity are many U.S. military installations, including the chief U.S. and having them write a report when in Hawaii in 2000. The team raises all the money to pay for the trips itself, through donations and fund-raisers. But there is a lot of red tape before the excursions are given a green light. It starts with Prince submitting the trip request to the principal's office, which he did Feb. 7 after getting the schedule together. Then it is sent to the league council for approval and then to the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming. The Antelope Valley District school board. That is where Prince said the holdup occurred. The board only meets once a month and Prince said the proposed trips were not put on the agenda in February, though they were ready. Prince said he submits the trip request in early February every year and gets it back by early March. By the time the trips were approved Wednesday, Prince couldn't book flights. He said he tried eight airlines for Hawaii and even investigated the possibility of driving to San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. He found only two coach seats for Australia. The Hawaii trip was planned to take place March 29-30 at a high school in Honolulu with the Australia trip following April 1-6 in Sydney. Highland does have three more out-of-state trips it hopes to complete, to Arizona Arizona (âr'əzō`nə), state in the southwestern United States. It is bordered by Utah (N), New Mexico (E), Mexico (S), and, across the Colorado R., Nevada and California (W). on April 12-13, Tennessee on April 19-20 and Utah on April 26-27. ``The reason we go is ... we have some kids who get scholarships and looks,'' Prince said. ``We know they don't come to the Antelope Valley, so we take the kids to them.'' It has paid off in the past, with sprinter Seth Amoo picked up by Arizona State after being seen at a meet in Arizona last year. With the Hawaii and Australia trips canceled, Prince said he plans to take more kids to the meets in Tennessee and Utah. --Foothill play begins: The Canyon girls' and Valencia boys' track teams used the last meet before league play began Thursday to reaffirm re·af·firm tr.v. re·af·firmed, re·af·firm·ing, re·af·firms To affirm or assert again. re themselves as favorites Another term for bookmarks, which was popularized by Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.
