Chris Chutuk had one thing in mind after running a personal record 14.54 in the 110 hurdles in the Foothill League finals last week: He wanted to find his coach.

It wasn't for the congratulations Valencia coach Mike Pontius would surely give him. It was to brag.

Pontius, a hurdler in high school, had been telling Chutuk for the past two years that his best of 14.71 in school was better than Chutuk had ever done.

``It's just kind of something fun to joke about with him,'' Pontius said. ``I tell him his old, fat coach ran faster than him.''

Chutuk is the top seed in the 110 hurdles and second seed in the 300 hurdles heading into Friday's Southern Section Division I prelims at Long Beach City College.

The senior is glad to challenge Pontius' record before finishing high school and to be peaking at the right time.

``It's been fun,'' Chutuk said. ``We always joke about it and I finally beat him. He was really excited when I found him.''

--Throw champ: As has been the case throughout the league, Ryan Davis of Saugus had no challenge in the Foothill League finals in the shot put.

Davis threw 56 feet, 10 inches on his first try and knew he didn't need to do any more.

``After the first throw, I knew I had it won,'' Davis said. ``So I kind of took it easy.''

Davis' throw puts him third heading into Saturday's Southern Section Div. II prelims at Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. . But to challenge for first, he likely will have to improve by two feet. His personal best is 57-6 1/2.

``I'm kind of disappointed that I wasn't able to throw a personal record in the shot put,'' Davis said. ``But the mark is good enough to put me in the top flight with all the big guys. I didn't want to choke (jargon) choke - To fail to process input or, more generally, to fail at any endeavor.

all were planning to drop the 1,600 and concentrate on the 3,200 beginning in the Foothill League finals. They all were scratched from the league finals but decided later that they wanted to run.

Llamas ran the 800 in most dual meets to help the team, meaning he had run only three miles on a rubber track.

``(Coach Dave DeLong) is giving me a hard time because I haven't broken his best time of 4:17.7,'' Llamas said. ``So he jokes that I can't run as fast as him.''

Canyon petitioned to have the three reinstated for the mile, needing approval of all league coaches. Approval was not granted. Llamas was visibly upset and ran a slower 3,200 than usual, finishing in third place but qualifying.
