PREP TENNIS: LOCAL TENNIS TEAMS TO BATTLE FOR TITLE.

Byline: Scott Magoloff Staff Writer

An all-San Fernando Valley boys' City Section tennis final is a rare occurrence. But yet, here it is: El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

of Woodland Hills and Granada Hills meet Thursday at the Warner Center Tennis Club for the section championship.

The Valley affair was set up when both teams won their semifinal matches Monday. The top-seeded Conquistadores defeated Carson 19 1/2-10 behind four wins from No. 2 singles player Matt Jones, and the Highlanders, seeded second, beat University 17-8.

The victories will bring these West Valley League co-champions together to decide the season series when it matters the most. Under the direction of longtime long·time

won the first league match against Granada Hills 4-3 and lost 5-2 the second time. Jones has never won a boys' city championship at Taft but has won three with the girls' team.

``It would be a dream come true,'' said Jones, in his first year with the Conquistadores. ``We're excited about having a chance to play in the city finals.''

Jones' players are also excited about facing the Highlanders to settle this season's series. But they also want to settle a score from last year, when Granada Hills eliminated the Conquistadores in the section semifinals. Another motivational factor for ECR's players is that their program has never won a championship before.

``Now that we're there, we feel pretty confident,'' said ECR captain Eric Movsessian, who along with teammate Burton Newman won all three of their doubles matches. ``I don't think we should have a problem.''

There was almost a major problem for Granada Hills when doubles player Anand Murthy could not attend the semifinals because he had to take an advanced-placement exam. The Highlanders forfeited for·feit

three doubles matches but arranged to replay them today if they had been the deciding factor in the match.

Luckily for Granada Hills, the other two doubles teams of Brian Mintz/Brad Steinberg and Mike Edelson/Ananya Sreepathi won all six of their sets.

``Our matches since I've been (at Granada Hills) have always been competitive,'' Highlanders coach Ron Wood Ronald David "Ronnie" Wood (born June 1, 1947 in Hillingdon, London) is an English rock guitarist and bassist best known as a member of The Rolling Stones, Faces, and The Jeff Beck Group.  said of ECR. ``It's turned into a heated rivalry Rivalry
