Tallas faces a tall order today in knocking off reigning champion Katy Nikolova in the City Section girls' tennis final.

But the Granada Hills standout has made a habit of conquering challenges throughout her debut season en route to becoming the first freshman since 2004 to reach the section championship, scheduled for 1 p.m. today at Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. . While trying to regain her fitness and comfort level on the court, the 14-year-old talent was forced to deal with some disappointing losses in nonleague and tournament competition before finally establishing a rhythm the last month of the season.

"I was quite upset with myself because of my injuries," Tallas said. "I was looking forward to coming to Granada Hills and playing for the team, but after a while, I was just hoping to heal in time to come back (at full strength) for the City tournament."

Tallas, one of two Granada Hills freshmen competing today at Balboa, is looking to become only the third Granada Hills athlete to win a singles championship, joining Canna canna [Lat.,=cane], any plant of the genus Canna, tropical and subtropical perennials, grown in temperate regions in parks and gardens for the large foliage and spikelike, usually red or yellow blossoms.  Furuta (2004) and Stephanie Harges (1981 and '83). Ninth-grader Allie Amor and partner Kelly Paris will face teammates Becky Friedman and Leann Hsueh in the doubles final.

Following a 6-1, 6-2 loss Nov. 14 to Nikolova in the City team playoffs, Tallas hasn't dropped a set in four tournament matches, recording a 6-3, 6-3 semifinal victory Friday over Taft of Woodland Hills sophomore Yuliya Maystruk.

"Beating Yuliya made me realize I'm really coming back and playing at a high level," Tallas said. "It was really important for me to come and out play well against her (to prepare for today). It gave me a lot of confidence."

Nikolova has encountered a more difficult path to the final, twice needing three sets to advance, most recently in Friday's 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory over Taft's Sarah Cohen cohen

. But the three-time finalist hasn't lost to a City opponent since falling to North Hollywood's Desiree Stone in the 2005 championship.

"It will be interesting to see how Alexandra adjusts after losing to Katy the first time," Granada Hills coach Simon Robertshaw said. "The good thing is she's playing her best tennis at the right time, but Katy is a fighter and won't go down easily. I think it's going to be the best match of the day."
