PREP SWIMMING NOTEBOOK: HIGHLAND, QUARTZ HILL SEEK ADVANTAGE IN SIMI.

Byline: ERIK BOAL Special to the Daily News

Even at a meet with nearly 1,200 swimmers, don't expect Highland and Quartz Hill highs to have difficulty finding each other.

Four days before their long-awaited dual meet at Eastside Pool, the Bulldogs and Rebels are going to do anything they can today at the 26th Royal of Simi Valley Simi Valley (sē`mē, sĭm`ē), city (1990 pop. 100,217), Ventura co., SW Calif. in an oil, fruit, and farm region; laid out 1887, inc. 1969.  Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

The name derives from Shimiji, the name of the Chumash village here before the Spanish.  Pool could be crucial in building momentum for Wednesday's showdown.

``It's batten-down-the hatches time,'' said Quartz Hill boys' coach Mark Thibault, whose team was second to Burroughs of Ridgecrest at last weekend's Knight Invitational, finishing 136-points ahead of third-place Highland. ``You can look at the times, and you can talk about it all you want, but when it's right in front of you, the bottom line is you've got to go out and swim.''

Quartz Hill's girls won the Knight Invitational for the second year in a row, with Highland finishing third.

``It's going to be two long (Saturdays) for us, but the competition is great,'' Thibault said. ``We've been beating (our swimmers) up in practice, so as long as they can stay close to their best times, that's a good sign.''

High hopes for Pino: Although Highland or Quartz Hill - both in Southern Section Div. IV - aren't considered among the frontrunners in a meet that features several Divs. I and II programs, Bulldogs freshman Sara Pino could win the 100-yard breaststroke.

Pino, who boasts the fastest entry time, 1 minute, 6.32 seconds, will go against two of the area's other talented ninth-graders: Hart of Newhall's Jordan Danny (1:06.49) and Crescenta Valley The Crescenta Valley is a small inland valley in Los Angeles County, California. Pino is also seeded eighth in the 200 individual medley med·ley

Littlerock thinking big: Littlerock's boys' swim team moved into third place with a 114-48 victory Wednesday over Palmdale, and it appears headed for a strong showing at the May 3 league finals at Eastside.

The Lobos' 200 free relay quartet of Tabrek Seyssel, Gabriel Jasso, Ricky Davison and Shane Frakes lowered its own program record with a second-place finish Noun 1. second-place finish - a finish in second place (as in a race)
