PREP SWIMMING: SMOKE ON THE WATER : FRESHMAN BULTEMA IS MUSIC TO WESTLAKE'S EARS.Byline: Heather Gripp Daily News Staff Writer Sarah Bultema has the perfect excuse for attending concerts: It helps her as a swimmer. Few are likely to argue since the Westlake High freshman already has proved herself to be one of the Marmonte League's top swimmers. She's turned in a Southern Section-qualifying time in the 100 butterfly butterfly, any of a large group of insects found throughout most of the world; with the moths, they comprise the order Lepidoptera. There are about 12 families of butterflies. Most adult moths and butterflies feed on nectar sucked from flowers. and hasn't lost a high school race yet. The music comes in as a way of maintaining focus. Bultema spends hours each day swimming laps. Thinking of her favorite songs makes the tedious practices bearable bear·a·ble adj. That can be endured: bearable pain; a bearable schedule. bear . ``You just need to get a good song going in your head,'' said Bultema, who lists attending concerts as her favorite activity aside from swimming. ``She's a really strong asset to the team because she can do anything,'' junior Calley Prezzano said. ``Everyone's so comfortable with her because she does have the (club) experience, and even from the first day she was really easy to get along with.'' Kurt White took over as coach of the Warriors only last week and hasn't seen Bultema swim. However, he knows her reputation is ``really good.'' Bultema's mom is a former swimmer, but it was a friend who convinced her to try the sport as a 7 year old. She decided she liked the sport so much she joined a club team in Camarillo that requires her to get up by 5 a.m. at least twice a week for practices. She also swims every day after school. ``It's like my whole life,'' she said. ``I don't have time for anything else.'' Except of course, a concert every now and then.
