PREP SPORTS: A GIRL FOR ALL SEASONS QUARTZ HILL'S CORLESS KEEPS BUSY SPORTS SCHEDULE.

Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  is Cassie Corless' forte. Basketball ranks as her weakest sport. Golf fits somewhere in between. Choosing a favorite among the three sports isn't as easy for the Quartz Hill High senior.

``I can't really say,'' Corless said. ``I love them all.''

Corless also has had success in each during a four-year high school career that will see her graduate this spring with 11 varsity letters.

As a catcher in softball as a junior, Corless batted a Golden League- leading .618 to earn all-league first-team honors. A four-year varsity member, Corless also played on the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. In the summer, Corless juggled the sports simultaneously. She fit in golf and travel softball with playing on the Quartz Hill basketball team, often on the same day.

``She was coming to basketball games from softball and playing golf in the morning,'' Quartz Hill basketball coach Steve Brumwell said.

Getting into condition for basketball has always been a challenge coming from golf season. But the three sports offer a rewarding balance.

``In golf, it's all on you,'' Corless said. ``No one can make that shot but you. Basketball and softball is a team thing, You can't win or lose a game; you have to depend on your teammates.''

Corless has had no formal training in golf. She picked up the sport while playing recreationally with her father and grandfather and did not play competitively until her sophomore year. As a freshman, Corless played volleyball volleyball, outdoor or indoor ball and net game played on a level court. She has received golf-scholarship interest from Pepperdine and Chico State, but her future in college will likely be in softball, for which she is being courted by Florida State and Cal Poly Cal Poly may refer to:

``The smart thing would be to concentrate on golf or softball,'' Corless said. ``I am probably never going to play basketball again, but I can't drop it for the rest of the team. I need to be a strong leader.''

Quartz Hill has particularly needed the leadership of Corless, a co-captain this season along with her best friend, Sharonne Herbert. Three players have transferred, two to league rival Palmdale, over the last two seasons and Brumwell is a first-year coach.

``After all that has happened, I didn't want to let my basketball team down and let my best friend down,'' Corless said.

Quartz Hill (9-9) finished 17-7 and third in league last season but matched last season's loss total before the start of Golden League play with a youthful lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime.  that includes Corless and Herbert, junior Ashleigh Bludso-Osborne and sophomores Rhiannon McCrumb and Alexis Crimes.

``It's been a rough road down to the coach and everybody else,'' Corless said. ``You have to do what you got to do. I have a lot of friends and it's not worth it switching schools for a sport. Moving crosstown cross·town or cross-town

For Corless, that has meant doing the most sports she can do at Quartz Hill.
