PREP SOFTBALL: CARSON UPENDS SURPRISING ECR IN CITY SEMIFINALS CARSON 6, ECR 3.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

In a supposed rebuilding year, El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

High of Woodland Hills will look back and be pleased with its run to the City Section Championship softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  semifinals.

It just didn't feel satisfying at this moment, minutes after the No. 3 Conquistadores didn't play their best game against second-seeded Carson, which took advantage of mistakes and snuffed out several ECR ECR Efficient Consumer Response

against top seed and South Bay rival San Pedro. ECR (18-10) wasn't supposed to be this close to the school's 13th City Section championship with just five seniors on the roster. But the Conquistadores demanded more.

``We know we have a good team and know we could have gone out and done it. This is a disappointing loss because we know we deserved to be at UCLA,'' said junior pitcher Megan Zwoyer (14-8). ``Yeah, it was rebuilding a little bit. But we know we could do it.''

``We can't make errors, can't give them runs,'' Conquistadores coach Lori Chandler Chandler, city (1990 pop. 90,533), Maricopa co., S central Ariz., in the Salt River valley; inc. 1920. But Carson is an accomplished hitting team, too. The Colts struck out just twice against Zwoyer and forced ECR defenders to make plays. The Conquistadores were sharp at other times on defense, but the Colts also sent balls where nobody could catch them.

In the fourth, Shaterra Davis hit a two-run homer. The Colts' best player, senior shortstop Adrienne Alo, tripled home another run before being thrown out at the plate bidding for Carson's second homer of the inning. Still, a five-run lead gave Colts' ace Danira Idamo (14-3) a comfortable margin.

``We started really good in the beginning of the season and the (bus drivers') strike went on and our bats went away,'' said Alo, who has signed with Oregon State. ``Lately, we've been trying to pick it up here and there and the last couple days we've been having batting practice. Every girl on this team loves to hit the ball.''
