PREP SOCCER PLAYOFFS: DIRTY WORK IN THE RAIN CAMARILLO, C.V. GIRLS NOTCH SHUTOUTS.

Kristen Palos' goal in the 72nd minute lifted Camarillo to a 1-0 victory over Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Clissold and McCauley added a goal each in the second half to drown Oxnard's hopes of getting back into the game.

``The conditions were horrible,'' Crescenta Valley coach Bud Dain said. ``It wasn't fair to play a game for both teams. Luckily for us, we scored early. Once we got the lead, it was really to our advantage. I knew it would be tough for them to come back under these conditions. I bet that ball was 40 pounds by the end of the game.''

The Falcons, who finished second to Arcadia in the Pacific League, play at Hart in the second round Saturday.

In Division II girls' soccer:

--Arroyo 2, Lancaster 0 Lancaster (12-11-1) was knocked out in the opening round of the playoffs for the second year in a row in a wild-card match at Arroyo.

Junior Erin Martinez scored two goals within five minutes on a free kick and off a corner kick, in the second half for Arroyo (13-6-3).

Martinez has 40 goals on the season.

Arroyo goalkeeper Judy Blok recorded her 11th shutout of the season and 48th of her career for the Knights, which will play Sunny Hills in the first round Friday.

``We outplayed them. We outshot them. We are a better team,'' Lancaster coach Rick Acuma said. ``I'm a little disappointed. I felt we were a better team, but we just gave up those two shots and they scored.''

In Division I boys' soccer:

--Rio Mesa 3, Leuzinger 2 Host Rio Mesa (14-8-3) reached Friday's first round, but for coach Brent King, the hard part is over.

``I always find the first (playoff) game to be the hardest, because we have to get our players to learn how to step up their level of play when the playoffs start,'' King said.

The Olympian lead was short-lived when Chris High scored on a Mike Floryan assist. Floryan scored the second goal, and after Leuzinger tied it on Vera's second goal, Diego Zuniga scored the game-winner in the final minutes of the first half.
