PREP ROUNDUP: HARVARD-WESTLAKE'S IRVIN TAKES TENNIS CROWN.

Byline: Daily News

Marissa Irvin of Harvard-Westlake won the Southern Section tennis singles championship Friday at Racquet Club of Irvine, defeating Maureen Diaz of Mayfield 6-2, 6-3 in the semifinal round, then Morisa Yang of West Torrance 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) in the final.

The Wolverines senior, who went undefeated this season and has accepted a scholarship to Stanford, lost just eight games in her first six sets en route to the final.

championship to cap a 26-5 season, the La Canada girls are off to a 2-0 start and have outgained their opposition 39-3.

The latest victim was Keppel, losing 14-1 Friday, when Becky Johan scored three goals and eight Spartans scored twice. La Canada opened its girls' season Wednesday with a 25-2 win over Hoover, Coral Cozad scoring a team-high six goals in that game.

Boylan's big week: Westmark senior Matt Boylan set his second school record of the week Friday, scoring a season area-best 51 points in an 83-52 nonleague boys' basketball win over First Lutheran. The 6-4 center, who scored 40 points in a season opener against Buckley on Tuesday, is averaging an area-best 41.7 points after three games with the 2-1 Lions. He also had 17 rebounds Friday to raise his rebounding average to 15 - another area best.

Local knowledge: When at-large surprise Arroyo Grande took the near 400-mile round trip to play at Arcadia in Friday's Southern Section Division III football semifinal, the Eagles from the Central Coast didn't need a road map. Their coach, Jon Huss, is no stranger to the Southland. He was a star running back for Van Nuys High, then coached Hoover to a rare playoff appearance in football before going on to produce a Division VII football title at Arroyo Grande in 1994.

Although the Eagles are now playing four divisions higher, and although they were only No. 4 in the rugged Northern League, they have more than held their own in the playoffs - blasting top-seeded and previously undefeated Newbury Park in a postseason opener on the road and then knocking off traditional power Muir to reach the semifinal round.

Another sport, another big game: Emmanuel Evans was the main man for the Birmingham Braves in their playoff-qualifying football season this year, and he seems to have made a smooth transition to his next sport. The versatile, 6-3 senior, who led City Section backs with 2,072 yards rushing, totaled 23 points and 15 rebounds Friday to help the Braves basketball team improve to 2-0 with a 57-48 win over Grant.
