Brandon Scales, an unheralded football prospect who rose to prominence this past season at Monroe High of North Hills, committed to Oregon State on Tuesday.

Scales, a 6-foot-4, 225-pound defensive lineman who had seven sacks, picked the Beavers over Washington State and Fresno State.

--Hopes dim for Browner, Romero: Receiver Brandon Browner Brandon Browner (born August 2, 1984) is a CFL cornerback for the Calgary Stampeders. His speed and competitive effort have made him a fan favorite in his short time with the team.

He played in college for Oregon State University.

Browner had committed to USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code.  before the season, and Washington State and Oregon State also were interested, said Sylmar coach Jeff Engilman, who added Browner hasn't taken the SAT. Romero received an offer from California before the season but was academically ineligible in November. He said he scored 720 on the SAT and probably will play at College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state.
