PREP FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2001: WELCOME TO WELCH CANYON'S NEW OLD COACH MAKING IMPACT.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Different coach, different approach.

That's the football story at Canyon High, where Harry Welch Welch , William Henry 1850-1934.

hopes to resurrect a program that hasn't been the same since he left in 1993.

Welch never had a losing season in 11 years as head coach. The highlights were three consecutive Southern Section championships from 1983 to 1985. Without him, the Cowboys cowboys, in American history.

have gone 38-46 under Larry Mohr and Jack Bowman.

Nothing is the same this season and that's the way Welch wants it. Welch's eight-person staff features all new faces, and even the logo on the helmet has changed - from a picture of a cowboy on a horse to simply the word ``COWBOYS.''

``Everything is new and different,'' said Welch, 55, sitting in his office before practice. ``The offense is different. The defense is different. Even the whole kicking game is different. The team has been running the wing-T and we've scapped all that.''

But the tradeoff for so much change is having Harry Welch back and most believe that's a pretty good deal. Judging by the number of hopefuls trying out for the team, his return means a lot. Canyon has 54 players on the roster, about a dozen more than last year.

``That's a lot higher than some years,'' Welch said. ``I've had championship teams in the 30s.''

Actually, Welch never really went away. Since retiring in 1993, he has remained on campus as a teacher, and two years ago he served as Foothill League rival Valencia's offensive coordinator An offensive coordinator typically refers to the coach on a football team in the National Football League or College football who is in charge of the offense. This position aids the head coach by designing and scripting plays, delegating work to offensive position coaches during , helping the Vikings to their first section-championship appearance.

But the league has changed a lot. Specifically, the power has shifted. Hart has won 43 league games in a row and Valencia has emerged into the clear No. 2 team.

Three-time Division III-champion Hart figures to beat Canyon easily when the teams convene CONVENE, civil law. This is a technical term, signifying to bring an action.  on October 20 because Welch is a mortal, not a miricle worker.

``Harry has already had a big impact,'' Hart coach Mike Herrington said. ``People are real excited about football over there and the community is backing him.''

For now, Welch has enough problems simply making the Cowboys competitive. Key running back Mark Barr Mark Barr was an American mathematician who, in about 1909, gave the golden ratio the name of phi, the first Greek letter in the name of Phidias, the Greek sculptor who lived around 450 BC.[1] References

``The team is coming together reasonably well,'' Welch said. ``One thing for sure, it's interesting being back. I love it.''
