PREP FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK: BOOKER CLOSES IN ON COLLEGE CHOICE.

Byline: Gerry Gittelson Staff Writer

Record-setting running back Lorenzo Booker of St. Bonaventure High in Ventura, one of the nation's top football recruits, is expected to announce his college choice at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the annual Ventura County Football Coaches Association luncheon at the Casa Sirena Hotel in Oxnard.

``This is a huge deal,'' Student Sports magazine recruiting coordinator Greg Biggins said. ``ESPN televising live? I don't think it gets any bigger than that.''

The luncheon is open to the public. For information, contact Westlake High football coach Jim Benkert at (805) 497-6711.

defensive back Jason Spratt or lineman Matt Jacobs receives a late offer, the streak might come to an end.

``A lot of things can still happen,'' Giannini said. ``I think at least one or both of them will end up somewhere. After the signing day, there are always colleges with scholarships left over, and that's when we'll put some packages together.''

Matthews, a former Westlake assistant, is 18-2 as head coach over the past two seasons for Agoura's frosh team in 2000 and JV in 2001. His son, junior Clay Matthews Jr., is expected to be Agoura's starting linebacker in the fall.

--Royal's Augusta commits: Offensive lineman Matt Augusta of Royal of Simi Valley will sign with Sacramento State, according to Royal coach Gene Uebelhardt.

--Keyes update: Birmingham of Van Nuys junior defensive back Dennis Keyes, expected to be one of the San Fernando Valley's prized recruits next season, said he has been visited by coaches from Arizona and UCLA, both of whom asked for transcripts.

Meanwhile, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Keyes said he's trying to put on muscle weight, and he's also a starting forward for the basketball team.

``Being on the basketball team is kind of humbling for me because I'm only averaging about four points a game,'' Keyes said. ``But that's OK. I'm in there to get rebounds and keep in shape.''

--Perez to choose: Burroughs of Burbank running back Mike Perez, the school's all-time leading rusher, is going to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo San Luis Obispo (săn l`ĭs ōbĭs`pō), city (1990 pop. 41,958), seat of San Luis Obispo co., S Calif., near San Luis Obispo Bay; inc. 1856.  on an official recruiting visit this weekend, and Burroughs coach Keith Knoop said Perez probably will commit.

``Mike definitely wants to go there and it's his only offer,'' Knoop said.

Teammate Gabriel Moise, a defensive lineman, is visiting with Perez. But Knoop said Moise can't sign until he attains a qualifying score on the SAT exam.

--Maybe next year for CV: Crescenta Valley, one of the region's most successful football programs the past three seasons, won't send any seniors to Division I universities for the second consecutive year, according to coach Alan Eberhart.

``It's been a two-year dry spell. We just don't get a lot of Division I kids,'' said Eberhart, who said quarterback Hudson Gossard might walk on somewhere.

Next year could be different. Junior linebacker Jason Jenkins, 6-2, 205 pounds, should be a sure-fire D1 prospect if he gets bigger as expected, Eberhart said.
