PREP FOOTBALL '97 - SOUTHERN SECTION PREVIEW PREP FOOTBALL '97 FRONTIER.For the last four years the Frontier League The Frontier League, based in Troy, Illinois, is a professional, independent baseball organization located in the Midwestern United States and Western Pennsylvania. It operates mostly in cities not served by Major or Minor League Baseball teams and is not affiliated with either. has been dominated by three teams: Nordhoff, Moorpark and Calabasas. Expect the same thing this year, although there could be a change at the top with Calabasas the favorite to win the league title. ``We've all battled for the championship since 1992 and unfortunately we always seem to end up in second place,'' Coyotes coach Larry Edwards said. ``Hopefully this year we can change that.'' Although Calabasas loses steady quarterback Scott Quigley, there's hope in junior replacement Dallas Enoch, a 6-foot-3, 200-pounder. Enoch was terrific over the summer, leading the Coyotes to 20 passing-league wins. He stands tall in the pocket, has a powerful arm and can read defenses. The only thing he lacks is experience. Running back Robby Coppola is a bigger, faster, stronger player than a year ago and figures to take pressure off Enoch with his running ability. ``Obviously we expect big things from Robby,'' Edwards said. ``He's got the type of speed that, even if mistakes are made upfront, he can get positive yards.'' Moorpark is always a threat, especially with an improved Chad Willis at quarterback, Mark Weaver at wide receiver and Jeremy Shoup at tight end. ``I think our level of play offensively will be much improved,'' said Moorpark coach Ron Wilford. ``In the past we've been known as a defensive team. Hopefully this year we can take some of the pressure off the defense with a better offense.'' The Musketeers are loaded defensively behind linebacker David Oviedo and linemen Tim Adrian and Robert Barker. Nordhoff loses some premier players from a year ago, but the Rangers are always a top team. Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc. is improved and Santa Clara Santa Clara, city, Cuba Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba. hopes to avoid last place. Malibu, coached by former Chaminade coach Rich Lawson, begins its first year at the varsity level. It will take time, but the Sharks will be a team to watch in the future. ?13- Vincent Bonsignore CALABASAS Coach: Larry Edwards (17th season). 1996 record: 8-4, 3-1. Outlook: The Coyotes are, in a word, loaded. There is speed at running back and wide receiver with Coppola (1,774 yards last year) and Hasan, Rosenbloom and Schaft. Up front a huge offensive line is anchored by Ellinghouse (6-5, 280). Although Calabasas has just 30 players, only three will play both ways. Defensively Gordon and Roe lead an experienced unit. This could be the year the Coyotes win the league championship. MOORPARK Coach: Ron Wilford (2nd season). 1996 record: 4-7, 1-3. Top returnees: LB David Oviedo, OT Robert Barker, RB Art Garcia, TE Byron Burnett, WR Mark Weaver, K/WR/DB Jeremy Shoup, WR/DB Erris Green. Top newcomers: G Ivan Macias, RB Art Lopez, LB Gilbert Gonzalez, G Jose Torres. (ub)Outlook: The Musketeers should be much improved with an experienced team. Willis, one of seven returning offensive starters, was solid at quarterback over the summer and he has plenty of weapons in Garcia, Burnett, Weaver and Shoup. The defense, always a strong point, appears as talented as ever with six returning starters. Oviedo (6-0, 205) is an outstanding linebacker and DiNapoli will be one of the top noseguards in the league after moving from fullback. FORECAST 1. Calabasas 2. Moorpark 3. Nordhoff 4. Santa Paula 5. But after the dust has settled, coach Dick Billingsley is still excited about the upcoming season. His optimism is the result of the Eagles' response to the adversity. ``They've had a tremendously positive attitude about what's happened,'' Billingsley said. ``After last year's debacle, they have a definite goal in mind to turn this thing around.'' Jeff Roberts or Christian Chivaroli will replace Massengale at quarterback. The offensive line is experienced with Eric Oelson, Adam Wiedenheft, Justin Cheney and Adam Mushet. Defensively, Billingsley promises a return to the aggressive, hard-hitting style that marked Eagles teams earlier in the decade. St. Bonaventure, under former Notre Dame assistant Jon Mack, is expected to be the class of the league with a huge offensive line and three all-league players returning on defense. Beware of linemen Robert Winson (6-foot-5, 260 pounds) and Andrew Jones (6-5, 250). Bishop Diego and Carpinteria are a bit thin this year while Fillmore is a team on the rise. ?13- Vincent Bonsignore OAK PARK Coach: Dick Billingsley (7th season). 1996 record: 1-9, 0-4.
